RECALL: PetEdge Toothpaste Recall

Posted on Thursday, November 15th, 2007 at 11:05 pm in News for Cats, Dogs & Owners, National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, Dogs, Cats, Pet Food Recalls & Safety.
By Emily Huh

Itchmo readers alerted us of a PetEdge toothpaste recall due to the potential of diethylene glycol. Emails were sent out to PetEdge customers notifying them of the recall.

Here is the recall information that was sent out to customers:

PetEdge is voluntarily recalling Top Performance brand ProDental Toothpaste with Toothbrush kit because the toothpaste could contain diethylene glycol. Only one product, which comes in two flavors, is affected:

Top Performance® ProDental Toothpaste with Toothbrush kit 1.4 oz.,

Item No. TP128
Beef flavor: UPC 721343128151
Mint flavor: UPC 721343128564

Diethylene glycol can cause headaches and illness, or in high doses, renal failure or death. Diethylene glycol is found in antifreeze and other solvents. The company has received no reports of any illnesses associated with this product and is recalling it out of an abundance of caution.

We ask that you immediately discard any ProDental 1.4 oz. Toothpaste (of either flavor) that you may have on hand and inform us of the quantity of discarded items by completing and returning the Product Destruction Log. We will provide a merchandise credit for the discarded product as soon as possible.

If you have questions or need further information, please contact us at 888-211-8706 or at mailto:questions@petedge.com?subject=Product Recall.

PetEdge appreciates your assistance with this voluntary recall and regrets any inconvenience this recall may cause.

Very truly yours,
PetEdge

1. Darn.
Now I am going to have to buy one of those MP3 Toothbrushes that play 'How much is that dog in the Window' in order to get Fido to brush for 2 minutes now that her favorite toothpaste is being recalled...

2. Makes one wonder if other brands of pet toothpaste are sate
Mine is from Quebec so hopefully it won't harm my pets.

3. There's toothpaste for pets?
Who knew? I just use a dry toothbrush on my dog, for 3 seconds, or for as long as he can stand it, whichever is longer.

4. Here's how to do daily maintenance on kitty's teeth (kitty willing, of course):
Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 12:41 PM by kestrel91316
Go to the drug store and buy some COTTON gauze squares (not the synthetic kind - it's not rough enough - use COTTON). Wrap a cotton gauze around your index finger tip and moisten with a drop or two of tap water. Use this finger "brush" to rub along the upper teeth (especially those along the cheeks) to scrub the debris off. Get the lowers as best you can, but the lower lip is tightly attached so they are harder. If you get a little blood, it's like when we brush our own teeth: sort of indicates you haven't been doing it enough.

Start off slow, once or twice a week. Work up to daily if you can. It only takes a few seconds to a minute. Don't set a timer and go for two or three minutes - kitty will not go along with the deal.

Note: no toothpaste or other poisoned Chinese imports needed.

7. I don't like the idea of the sodium ingestion. Plus, ANYTHING

you use other than water is going to freak the cat out.

Cotton gause is coarse and abrasive enough to do the job.
