Brushing Off Nagging Suspicions of a Bush Coup
Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 12:27 PM by bigtree

"Suspicion all our lives shall be stuck full of eyes;
Treason is but trusted like the fox,
Who never so tame, so cherished and locked up,
Will have a wild trick of his ancestors."
--Shakespeare

I was in the process of my daily brush-off of that nagging suspicion of mine that there's no way that Bush will just allow his entire autocracy to wither and withdraw in the face of the election of one of the Democratic candidates -- all of them pledged to end his manufactured assault and occupation of Iraq which he insists is the 'center' of his manufactured terror war -- when I heard the statements of his Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, threatening layoffs of military personnel and the cannibalizing of the existing Defense budget to cover costs for continuing their vastly unpopular mission in Iraq over the objections of the majority of Americans and a clear majority in Congress.

It was a rare display of backbone from Democratic leaders in both houses -- declaring that they wouldn't part with any more money for Iraq until Bush agreed to an end date and committed himself to an orderly withdrawal -- which motivated Bush's Pentagon to their bullying and pouting. It's not like Congress hasn't already given Bush 'more money for Iraq than he knows what to do with,' as Senate Leader Reid, himself said in a defiant press conference focusing on the costs of the occupation which were highlighted in a 21-page report pegging the total cost of Bush's dual occupations at $3.5 trillion.

Republicans on the congressional Joint Economic Committee responded to the Democrat's Iraq report by demanding it be withdrawn. But the White House and their Pentagon toadies aren't going to be satisfied to just demand that Democrats put their blinders and administration feed bag back on. Instead of bending to the will of the American people and surrender their destructive, deadly fiasco, the cabal has decided to threaten the American people with the military forces' own demise, much like O.J. with the gun to his head in a slow-motion flight from justice.

"There is a misperception (Bushite grammar) that this department can continue funding our troops in the field for an indefinite period of time through accounting maneuvers, that we can shuffle money around the department. This is a serious misconception," Gates said. “If the Congress does not provide bridge funding this week on a bill the president will sign, and given the uncertainty of future action in December, by the end of this week -- as a prudent manager -- I will be obliged to take a series of anticipatory steps,” Gates warned.

Democrats have long argued that the Pentagon has more than enough money to effect the withdrawal of troops from Iraq; even if they have to reach into the existing budget to make it happen. Others, arguing for an end to the occupation, but, rejecting a cut-off of essential funds that troops might need for their survival and well-being while left stranded in Iraq, have insisted that Bush has more than enough options to continue funding his occupation to the end of his term without the money he's making such a political spectacle about.

The reality is, Bush will never voluntarily end his occupation as long as he is allowed the means to proceed, with or without any more authorizations from Congress. If Bush decides to bull through and cast aside the demonstrated will of Americans' representatives in Congress, and continue his occupation, he, alone, will have to bear the responsibility for whatever structure or component of our government or our nation's defenses he chooses (again) to rape, disrupt, or dismantle. But, the American people, and those abroad affected by his autocratic militarism, will bear the brunt of the consequences from his arrogance.

Despite the glaring contradiction of Democrat's past acquiescence to Bush in providing funding enough to last (Murtha insisted yesterday) until March 2008, the Democratic withdrawal legislation passed in the House gave up another $50 billion, which both leaders argued is Bush's to either accept or reject; take it or leave it. We'll see.

The administration and their Pentagon cohorts are straining to make their imperious denial over the evaporation of American support for any mission in Iraq Bush or his generals dream up, look like a defense of national security. But, apart from the declarations by the administration that it's been more effective to fight bin-laden in Iraq than in Afghanistan/Pakistan, where the 9-11 suspect and instigator of terrorism worldwide been allowed safe haven from the bulk of our military resources and manpower, there is no evidence at all that there is anything in Iraq for Americans to defend or defend against.

“It seems to me that there ought to be some deference to those who are running the war -- the generals -- at the pace at which this drawdown should take place,” Gates told reporters.

The Democratic withdrawal proposal "would only partially fund our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan but fully embolden our enemies," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said in a statement Wednesday.

It's more than a wonder and concern that administration shills for Bush's Iraq occupation still refuse to recognize the enabling effects of their own mindless military aggression in the Middle East. Their denial has become a disease which is both malignant and infectious. In Pakistan, it's hard not to regard Musharraf's autocratic attempts to control his country's electoral process as a bit production of Bush's own imperialistic opus.

Daniel Ellsberg, in an article published this week in the American Free Press, had no hesitancy in his own accusations of an established American dictatorship in Bush's reign. "Let me simplify . . . and not just to be rhetorical," he wrote. "A coup has (already) occurred."

It's becoming difficult to imagine Bush and his cronies voluntarily relinquishing the gains they've achieved through their own anti-democratic maneuvering and obstruction. It's easy to imagine Bush and Cheney insisting that they are the only ones who can reasonably defend America against the effects of their own contrived 'war on terror,' because of an elected Democrat's insistence on ending their Iraq folly.

I'm still brushing those nagging reservations I have, away into that little, naive compartment in my mind where I want to believe in the resolve of Americans (and our representatives in Congress) to stand in the way of such tyranny in our own country. But, I've been watching our Congress and listening to the president . . .

1. My conspiracy theory fear is that Hillary is scheduled to be handed
the keys to the corporate kingdom, and the real players will remain the same, and continue to reap the same obsene profits. Her language in last nights "debate" was straight from the rove playbook. If/when she does not get the nomination, then we may see some more overt imperialism from der bushler and crew. Last night's "debate" really gave me a lot more concern of her motives.

3. So I don't think they will overtly overthrow orderly succession.
The 2008 election will once again be tainted by massive fraud, but it is quite likely that they will not be able to keep a Democrat out of the White House. I think they have a plan for that event.

1) they will start something with Iran and Syria that will make it very difficult for the next president to do anything about getting out of Iraq. The theory being to 'burn the bridges' making it almost impossible for the president to get out of the mess.

2) they will do everything they can to destroy the new president, as they tried and partially succeeded with Clinton.

3) they will fight tooth and nail to keep every bit of their 'enabling legislation' and 'asserted powers' in place.

4) they view at least one of the three top candidates as on board with their little experiment in world domination. Likewise, as we have seen since the 2006 elections, the Corporate Kleptocracy and War Party has maintained functional control of Congress despite the Republican Party having lost majority status.

24. I tend to agree with you, Warren Stupidity, and the OP--the coup has already occurred,
and unless our efforts to overturn it start succeeding, likely there will be no showdown, such as many of us have imagined, of martial law being declared, elections suspended and Bush/Cheney barricaded in their bunkers against legal removal by the people.

Several reasons why I think such a scenario unlikely:

1. The war profiteers and global corporate predators who have implemented this fascist coup have gone to elaborate lengths to create an illusion of democracy--we see it every day on TV, and we now know that one of its most occult aspects (deliberately black-holed as a news story) is the complete takeover of our vote counting system, with electronic voting machines run on 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by rightwing Bushite corporations, with virtually no audit/recount controls. With this final blow to our democracy--which occurred in October 2002 (same month as the IWR, and closely related to it), and was fast-tracked into place during the 2002 to 2004 period--the corporate rulers gained direct, invisible control of our election outcomes. So they don't NEED to perpetrate a further coup. They can pick our candidate. They can crown our president. And they can play "bait and switch" with corporate-anointed president and congress members, shuffling out Repukes and shuffling in "Blue Dog" (traitor) Democrats, as necessity requires, to maintain the ILLUSION that we are still a sovereign people with "choices."

I think they don't want to be bothered with shooting a lot of us, in a rebellion. Their maintenance of the illusion--the fake political "debate," the faked election results, etc.--is a more efficient way to keep us under control, and has so far proven quite effective. I think that even this little dustup with Bush about the 'Democrats' not giving him enough billions of our (non-existent) tax dollars--after they already escalated and re-funding the war with another $100 billion--is part of the game.

2. The motives of the Bush Junta. They are more greedy pigs than they are nazis. The Nazis built a great war machine. What are the Bushites doing? Looting it. If they were nazis, and intended a Fourth Reich, wouldn't they have given a bit more attention to our manufacturing capability, jobs and bread on the table for "good Germans," "making the trains run on time," and all that? They have left the U.S. economy in absolute ruins. How can you play Emperor of the World from a country that can no longer make its own tanks, bullets, uniforms, et al, nor even manufacture its own rigged voting machines (which are manufactured in sweatshops in the Philippines!)? They may well have a plan for World Domination with headquarters in Dubai, and the mercenary army they have created, and the billions and billions they have stolen. But I see no evidence that they intend to, or can succeed in, launching a war on the world from THIS country--aside from domestic repression laws (which may be more related to giving the principals of the Bush Junta legal immunity for their past crimes, than to future planned repression by the Bush Junta). And they have been utter failures at convincing Americans that we have a "manifest destiny" to rule the Middle East or the world. Their propaganda in that regard (and other regards) has been spectacularly unsuccessful (unlike that of Hitler in Germany). 70% of the American people oppose their goddamned war--an epochal anti-war majority--up from 56% who opposed it from the beginning (Feb. '03). So I think retirement with their loot, and their operating as a stateless World Dominator (or one with the cooperation of fake 'Democratic' regime in the U.S.) is a more likely scenario than their attempt to rule this huge country, with all its various peoples and cultures, by force (by an overt coup). Their goals are to get away with as much money as they can, and to keep the principles stay out of jail--the goals of "Banana Republic" coupsters--not the goals real Nazis.

3. The goals of the global corporate predators who are behind all this are a more serious matter, and a bigger threat. Their goals were to move U.S. policy and political dialog far, far to the right, create the illusion that the rightwing is the majority, remove us and our laws as potential regulators and/or angry dismantlers of corporate power, loot us blind, and set things up so as to have total control over wages, working conditions, public infrastructure, health care (who gets it, who doesn't), to create a slave labor market (like the several they have collected around the world), and, in addition a pool of cannon fodder for corporate resource wars, and of course to control the price of everything, to price gouge and manipulate at will. They also wanted to set up repressive laws to contain any rebellion. And they have made enormous gains toward all of their goals under Bush/Cheney. Our Constitution now is fairly meaningless. We are no long a nation state, with a democracy, under the rule of law. We are a subject people of the Church of the Corporation. And they simply will not permit a champion of the people to make it to the White House, nor a majority of real representatives of the people in Congress. They have direct control of election outcomes, with "trade secret" vote counting, and numerous, powerful indirect controls such as massive amounts of money poured into political campaigns, control of the media and the national political narrative (and parameters of debate--very narrow, never including dismantling corporations), and massive domestic spying to blackmail office holders and silence dissenters. They also have control of the war industry and the police state mechanisms--everything has been pretty much privatized.

These global corporate predators have no need to create the chaos of an overt, visible fascist coup, and risk rebellion against it. Also, I think part of their game is to blackmail Bush and Cheney, with the threat of (even worse) revelations and jail, to keep the pressure on them, for certain purposes (for instance, U.S. action to retain some looting ground in Latin America, which they are quickly losing to the peaceful, democratic Bolivarian Revolution), to prevent any compromises with Congress on the war budget lard, etc., and they will continue this kind of dirty pressure on whomever they crown emperor and on the toadies they place in Congress (the majority).

In any case, what do Bush/Cheney have to fear, as to prosecution, with a "liberal" Democrat like Pelosi taking "impeachment"off the table"? The political establishment clearly intends to cover up their many crimes, and lose them in the corporate news monopoly river of forgetfulness. And that will continue to be the case, as the Bush Junta bullies and bribes "free trade" deals with countries like El Salvador and Peru, warmongers against Iran (as cover for military lard, and to "contain" Iran--there won't be an attack; Russia and China have nixed it), and finish up part one of this coup, before the "liberals" take over, to consolidate all these fascist gains and complete our subjugation.

------------------

Our job, first of all, is to restore transparent elections--vote counting that everyone can see and understand, in the PUBLIC venue.

Without this first and most vital condition of democracy, we have no hope of overturning Corporate Rule.

I don't know who they've chosen for president (emperor)--my best guess is Hillary Clinton with Christopher Dodd as VP. (You laugh at the latter? Guess who is the 'Democrat' most responsible for the "trade secret" voting machines? They owe him one.) I really don't know if Obama and Edwards are part of the Corporate Cabal. Edwards may not be. And, if he isn't, you can be sure that he will be 'swift-boated' or worse. Even with direct control over election outcomes, they have to be careful to maintain the grand illusion. So, first they try 'swift-boating,' then other tactics (infiltration, bribery, blackmail), and, if all else fails, THEY 'count' the votes with 'TRADE SECRET' code. And, of course, the war profiteering corporate news monopolies are directly collusive.

In fact, in 2004, they DOCTORED their news media consortium exit polls (Kerry won), late on election day, to force them to fit the results of Diebold/ES&S "trade secret" formulas (Bush won), to prevent a leader reaching the White House who was beholden to the people, and not to the Corporate Rulers. Kerry wasn't a great candidate, but if he had won (and in fact he did), it would have been US who achieved that win--the grass roots, who matched the fascist money machine, dollar for dollar, and blew the Bushites away, nearly 60/40, in new voter registrations in 2004.*

My date for the fascist coup is October 2002--the passage by the Anthrax Congress of the so-called "Help America Vote Act" ($3.9 billion electronic voting boondoggle, to fast-track "trade secret" vote counting all over the country for the 2004 and subsequent elections). I think it is no accident that the Iraq War Resolution was passed in the same month. The IWR guaranteed unjust war; HAVA provided the means to shove that unjust war down the throats of the American people.

But that was not its only purpose. Consider the current Congress, elected by the same 'TRADE SECRET' system, which can now be used to shape a Congress to keep the war booty coming, pass other fascist laws, and maintain the illusion of democracy by putting a "D" in front of its name. There is hardly a member of this Congress who can prove that he or she was actually elected.

Call the Bush Junta part one of the fascist coup. This undemocratic Diebold II Congress--with a "D" in front of its name that doesn't mean Democrat--is part two. Part three is coming up. It won't be an overt coup, is my guess (Bush/Cheney hanging onto power, with teeth and claws). It will look smooth as silk.

----------------------

*(100,000 people voted in 2000, which was a virtual tie, with Gore winning the popular vote, but not by much. 120,000 people voted in 2004, with the grass roots Democrats winning the new voter registration drive, hands down, 60/40. People were flocking to the Democratic Party to oust Bush. What happened to all those votes? If most Gore '00 voters voted for Kerry, and most Bush '00 voters voted for Bush--a safe bet--who did the new 20,000 voters vote for, given a 60% Democratic edge in new voter registration against the Republicans, and given the known stat that the overwhelming majority of independent, Green Party, and former Nader voters, voted for Kerry? You do the math. Steven Freeman has. And he comes up with 4 million 'disappeared' votes for Kerry, which would have put Kerry in the White House, beholden to the people, instead of Bush, who doesn't give a fuck what the people think. And that doesn't even count all the purged and suppressed black votes--which Greg Palast has estimated at one million in 2004. Add in brown voters, the elderly, students and others who were disenfranchised, and Kerry won it by a landslide. It wasn't even close.)

5. A Gradual Descent
Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 01:00 PM by parkerll
Naomi Wolf outlines the schedule of events in her new book The End of America. It probably won't be a massive, violent event like what has occurred in Pakistan or Myanmar. There is just a gradual erosion of our liberties. Remember when "terrorist" referred to middle eastern fundamentalists? The definition has expanded to include animal rights activists, environmental activists, and now includes those websites that question the official story of 911 events.
As Wolf points out we will still have The New York Times, online shopping, and iPods. We just won't have liberty. Our nation is slouching toward fascism.
There is an excellent video on youtube of Wolf discussing her book. It will scare the hell out of you.

7. I think the coup is a done deal
By the time the next President takes office everything will be under neo-con control. Everything, including whoever is President, so it won't matter which party is the majority or which party the President belongs to. Are we really expecting to have a date that we can mark on our calendars as the day the coup happened? Are they going to hold a press conference to tell us we're now officially a dictatorship or to let us know they've managed the slowest creeping coup in history? The only reason they haven't shut down the internet is because they haven't found a way of doing it, but they have effectively shut down democracy.

25. I think the coup
Started 11/22/63 when Poppy Bush helped kill JFK. I think the whole gas shortage of the 70's was also a trick of Poppy's. He had a lot of middle eastern ties to help make Carter look bad. I also think the hostages in Iran was also from Poppy too. He would have the power to do that telling them in return when he becomes president he will pay them back. I think Poppy tried to kill Reagan but failed. It wouldn't surprise me that John Lennon's murderer was a trial run for Hinkley. Mark David Chapman stayed on an Island owned by the Hinkley's and worked there. I think Poppy also is involved in 9/11 because Jr is way too stupid to do anything this complicated. And while most of this was happening who held high offices in DC. Oh what a coincidence Dick Cheney, Donnie Rumsfailed, Condi, Paul Wolfowitz. This has been planned for a long time and I think they are going to attack us again so Jr can declare Martial Law very soon. Where ya gonna go when the gas stations don't have gas or it's $10.00 a gallon. Or the trucks stop coming to deliver food. Eventually they will get the populace to do what they say if they want to eat or their children to eat. They have this power and when they close the congress and the senate who will speak against them. Like now NOBODY.

appoint life term judges and make enough money to keep them safely in the top one percent. Bush will not go back to chopping brush he will be in a lot of boards and spending time in civilized places. The ranch was only a photo backdrop for the gullible.
I do not think they want Hillary to be president but they do want to hand over such amess that no democrat will make any new progress, he/she will be so busy cleaning up the republicans' mess. So you see, a coup really is unnecessary and way too much work.
