New Orleans Population growing by 5,000 per month
(approximately per local demographer)

Jul05 - 455,000
Jul06 - 223,000
Today - 288,000

French Quarter, Central Business District and Uptown have a pretty good population base but New Orleans East is still ghost townish.

Another bit of good news, this weekend the first annual Po-Boy Festival to be held in the Big Easy. Another decadent time to worship incredibly delicious food.

1. That is good news, but we need the soul of NO to return.
By that i mean all the ninth ward folks, that's what i consider the soul of New Orleans.

Peace!

5. I forgot to mention a movie that describes New Orleans soul,
pretty good movie imho. The movie "A Love Song for Bobby Long" starring John Travolta. Man this movie made me fall in love with New Orleans all over again, it captured the people of NO to a tee.

Peace!

6. You are the only person
I have seen refer to that movie! I loved it.

Whenever I think with sadness about NO post-Katrina, I think about that movie.

7. It is a great little film. not many have seen it from what i can tell.
But i'm sure it out on DVD by now, and really worth the time! And it captures New Orleans better then any movie i've ever seen, and it's not really about NO it just takes place there. It has allot of soul.

Peace!

P.S. Someone going by "elad" left a comment over there the other day. Can it be??

edit: Perfesser Ashley is also planning to attend the po-boy fest. He is difficult to miss, especially if he's a) in the mime getup, b) bringing the fife 'n' drum, and/or c) showing the enormous Saints tat on his bicep. You can clearly see why I love the guy; if you encounter him, please do tell him that his secret admirer KamaAina says Aloha! and is still semi-seriously looking for a way to get back in (so it'd be 5,001 that month!).

14. I'm making Meatball Po-Boys for supper tonight
The wife's going home to Mama for a few days so I think I'll to the quarter this weekend for a little Christmas Shopping. Might swing by the Alpine and get a blackened Shrimp Caesar Salad, one of my favorites. Rebuilding New Orleans One Beer at a time.

16. Here ya go my friend!:
:toast:

Be careful walking around the Quarter at night, or anywhere else in New Orleans. ;) We have a shitload of crack dealers, criminals, and murderers from other states thinking they can literally kill and get away with murder, which many of them do nowadays. Be especially careful of the gutter punks, as most are not from here and are very dangerous.

Blackened Shrimp Caesar Salad... mmm! :9 Bon appetite!

20. Thank Ya Swamp Rat
I always park at Elysian Fields and Decatur, (at Oliver Thomas' infamous parking lot) walk into the quarter trying to stay between Bourbon and the River and I'm always home before the Sun goes down (Thats more a reflection of my age.) I know there are a few trinkets down around the Farmer's market that my Wife has had her eye on so shopping should be easy. We've always enjoyed the Alpine for Breakfast or Lunch. Back in my olden days I'd carouse the Quarter into tomorrow morning but I've slowed down a bit and enjoy myself when the Suns up.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving and beyond My Friend.

21. That's a good place to park.
I parked there Thursday night of last week to go to an art show (Taylor Bercier Fine Art, 233 Chartres St.).

At night, I mostly hang out on Frenchman St. to play or listen to music.

Let me know if you come for Mardi Gras. ;)

Don't forget to eat a muffaletta from Central Grocery! :9

22. Great chatting with you My Friend
My wife loves the Bywater Arts Fest on the third Saturday of each month at Markey Park on Royal. We get there just about every other month. And then just a quick drive to the quarter.

You may consider this blasphemy but we prefer Franks Muffaletta's to Central Grocery, but just by a smidgen. And I have been known to make an awesome home made Muffaletta. We love that Olive based Heaven on a plate.

I always look forward to Mardi Gras; wish it would come just a tad later in the year.

19. A delicacy my Friend and a potential mess
but that's okay. A big french bread loaf cut in half with piping hot Meatballs and spaghetti sauce poured in. Maybe a sprinkling of parmesan cheese and sliced onion to taste. Served with a side order of wilted spinach salad. Bibs are recommended.

9. I was down there this week to do outreach for work.
Some of the case workers were talking about an increase in their case loads, since people are moving back. They're back to about 80% of their pre-K number

My coworker and I stayed right by the FQ, but still found some time to drive around the 9th Ward. So sad.

And the crime is still out of control. Two guys attempted to rob me on my way back to hotel Wednesday night. I was one block off of Bourbon Street. I'm still pretty sore, bruised and cut up, but fortunately I was able to get away before anything worse happened.

10. Good Lord
Thanks for your help in New Orleans and I hope you recover from your injuries. That's freaking horrible. So many people willing to help and yet so many willing to do even them harm.

13. It was pretty freaking scary.
One guy grabbed me by my right arm real tight and either had his hand on a gun in his pocket or was pretending to have one. Once I saw the second guy cross the street to join the fun, I pulled away and took off running. The next morning when I saw my coworker, I said pretty much the same thing you said: "If only those guys knew we were down here to help, maybe they would have left me alone".

Anyway, our outreach was very successful and we're probably bringing our program down in late January/early February (after Mardi Gras, of course!) One of the agencies remarked how they wished we could start our training the following day. So, we're pretty happy that there was such a huge buy-in.

15. Mardi Gras
is February 5th. Not much of any production will be done on that day. If you get the chance to come down for a little jocularity, the French Quarter Fest 11-13 April is a great time. Its like a mini Jazz Fest with food booths and music booths situated throughout the quarter. It has always been a great time and happens right before the weather gets miserable.

Thanks Again for your Time.

23. Fastest-growing city in the country!
measured from the post-K baseline of perhaps 90,000 who either tried to ride it out :dunce: or were left stranded.

In the words of the Gropenfuhrer, "I'll be ba-ack!"
