Student Faces Expulsion For Rifle Incident
Hunter Says He Forgot He Had Rifle In Truck

SMITHVILLE, Mo. -- A high school senior could be kicked out of school for leaving a rifle in his truck.

There are strict rules about bringing weapons onto school property, but there is some leeway built into Missouri law.

But the family of 18-year-old Steven Weeks is worried he won't get any.

Weeks is an avid hunter. On Nov. 1, he went into the woods after school.

"I decided I was going to go hunting before the football game, so I came home grabbed my .22 and an extra box of shells," Weeks told KMBC's Dan Weinbaum.

After hunting, Weeks came home, ate and then went to the football game at Smithville High School. He said he forgot he had an unloaded rifle on the passenger seat of his truck.

"I made the mistake of locking my keys in there, and that's when everything started getting bad," Weeks said.

Someone told police about the rifle and Weeks was arrested.

1. How the hell did he miss a rifle -on the seat-? Also, a .22 is a shitty gun for hunting
anything much bigger than a squirrel...

4. I think my dad had a .22 for rabbits......

This kid's human. He forgot that something as ordinary as a .22 for hunting is seen as a major terrorist threat by the freaks who seem to be in control of our world these days......

Expulsion is HIGHLY inappropriate where no harm was intended.

9. I'll give the student the benefit of the doubt
And believe that he didn't intend any harm. But is this responsible gun handling? What if someone had broken into his pickup while he was at the game, someone who did intend to harm someone else? Now, I realize that a .22 is probably not going to do much more than make someone mad, but I've heard of folks getting killed by "lucky" shots even from a BB gun.

How many incidents should the student have before expulsion would be an appropriate punishment? And what would be the appropriate punishment for this one? Three days' suspension? A week? A month? Or is the mortification of being such a careless but law-abiding (always law-abiding!) gun owner sufficient punishment?

5. Surely he was well aware of the rule
prohibiting guns on school property. Hard to believe it was a simple mistake.

3. When I was in high school we had a rifle club I belonged to.
We shot guns in the gym and one day some mean adults complained and that was the end of our rifle club.

7. All of them. School had to close down for lack of students.
No, the adult guys who ran the club took care of them and we were always safe. We had a kitchen attached to the gym and these two (Actually nice) ladies came out with looks of shock on their faces and asked me why we were shooting guns (.22 rifles) and I perkely replied, "Cause we're in the Rifle Club!"

They complained to the director of the school and we had to join other clubs instead. Looking back on it, it probably was a dumb idea to shoot guns in the gym.

8. My high school parking lot was full of guns
Particularly in November when gun deer season opened. There were several trucks with two or three in the back window. We never thought anything of it.
