Gloria Estefan sang in Spanish on Dancing With The Stars tonight...
This is only one thread on their message board caterwauling about her singing in Spanish on "our" TV. We have truly become two nations and I am proud to be part of the sane half.

Hey Gloria!....THIS is not Mexican tv

Gloria is alright, but COME ON !!!!!!!!!! There are plenty of Mexican tv channels for that C---P.

I suppose she is trying to make her statement for her culture, but the rest of us don't really appreciate it. This is an english speaking channel. Ok, I am ready for the hate mail.

1. Yes, I love hearing people perform tangos, cha-chas, and rumbas...
...but I hate it when they're not sung in ENGLISH.

And while we're at it--Taco Bell makes great food, but it's all in SPANISH! Taco, burrito, enchilada--COME ON!!!

4. I recently received an e-mail from someone who is politically aware
A fellow author whose first novel was a political futuristic romance about a coup in the U.S., and political prisoners being sent to a prison on the moon.

But what she sent me stunned me. It was a screed about the National Anthem being sang in Spanish. I don't understand the problem, personally. I bounced emails back and forth with her about it and realized she's one of the people who really have issues with the illegal immigration problem. I'm not a big fan of illegal immigration, but I also realize it's not a black and white issue. While I think it's unfair for all of those who work as hard as they do to get here legally, I also realize that the U.S. has been held up as the land of opportunity for so long, there are literally millions of people who want a chance to make a better life for themselves and are willing to risk their lives to get here.

But this objection is just plain stupid.

Aside from being a Cuban!!!

She was honored as the "GOP BABE OF THE WEEK!!" No, I am not kidding. http://www.jerseygop.com/RepublicanBabes56.html

Click on the link and see Gloria's words to Monkeyboy before she sang lovingly to him!!!!

Bwahahahaha!! Fucking idiots--trashing one of their OWN!!!

11. Gloria Estefan supports Hillary Clinton for President
Maybe one of you smart people can translate this report of a recent interview with Glora Estefan.

28. Yep. Translation
Basically, she said that she isn't a member of either party.

But it says "the singer confirmed that she would vote for Hillary Clinton for the presidency of the United States 'because I believe that politics needs more estrogen.'"

35. She waited until she got to ROME to mention that! We know how they "love" Booosh over there--not!
She's no fool--she wants to sell that brand new album, and she'd have to be a total idiot not to be disgusted at this stage of the game. She's saying that now she doesn't actually support Bush, and doesn't like the war. She isn't Republican, she isn't a Democrat, the parties disgust her! She is voting for Clinton.... because politics needs more ESTROGEN...!

Well--she's playing both ends against the middle, now. Her support though, tells me that FL just might go blue this time around; Diebold willing. Funny, when ya get older, ya wanna go home--and even those FL Cubanos gotta realize that Castro cannot live forever (they keep trying to pronounce him dead, and the old bastard won't have it!). We know her big beef is wrapped up in the Cuba thing (remember how pissed she got about Elian?). Her daddy was a Bay of Pigs guy, too, so the "I hate Fidel" stand of BushCo no doubt appealed to her. Another "One Issue Voter" she was--though the fact that she probably did a lot better taxwise under BushCo didn't hurt, either.

Make no mistake--this is a genuine sea change for her. I wonder if she thought an interview in Italy would make it back this way?

She rode the fucking elephant for seven years, thus far:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/19/national/19bush.html
The two hours included a mix of the serious, standup comedy and nightclublike production numbers. Darrell Hammond, the comedian, made fun of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Gloria Estefan sang a song she wrote in memory of her father, and the 41st president read aloud a letter he sent home to "Mother and Dad" after being shot down in World War II.

Mr. Bush's speech today was delivered at a sometimes raucous event where Jeb Bush delivered remarks almost entirely in Spanish and Gloria Estefan sang the Cuban national anthem. ''Ironically, the citizens of Cuba are still waiting for the freedoms embodied in this anthem,'' Ms. Estefan said from the stage.

WASHINGTON -- Former "Frazier" star Kelsey Grammar, teen idol Hillary Duff, singer Gloria Estefan and 2003 "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard are among the headline entertainers for President Bush's inauguration.

Surrounded by Latin musicians, President Bush celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by creating a commission to give him ideas for improving academic achievement by Hispanic Americans. The 25-member commission, Bush said Friday, will "open new doors of opportunity for Hispanic boys and girls all across America." Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan played master of ceremonies in the White House East Room. With a stageful of singers, she performed "The Last Goodbye," penned in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. "Mi Casa Blanca es su Casa Blanca"--my White House is your White House, Bush told his audience before welcoming 18 Hispanic dignitaries, including ambassadors, administration officials and pro baseball stars.

41. Looks like someone has been googling Gloria
In the interests of fairness, here is a link to a first-hand account by Ed Gillespie, who was a senior staffer in the Bush-Cheney campaign team, confirming that Gloria Estefan did not perform at the Republican National Convention in 2000.

Someone kept saying that Gloria Estefan was going to sing on the first night of the convention, but I couldn't nail down whether this was true. It was one of those somebody knows somebody who knows her kind of deals, but I couldn't get a firm answer from the people who had been charged with working on the program to that point.

My old friend (and now business partner) Marc Lampkin, who was responsible for floor operations at the convention, would laugh every time someone mentioned Gloria Estefan, which was a little disconcerting to me.

"Why are you laughing every time we talk about Gloria Estefan?"

"Let me tell you something," Marc said in his raspy voice. "I'm more likely to sing on opening night than Gloria Estefan. Those guys are full of it."

Finally, I called a friend at the Recording Industry Association of America and asked him if he knew of Gloria Estefan's schedule for the summer, because we were counting on her playing Monday night of the convention.

He called me back an hour later.

"Gloria Estefan has a concert in Japan on July 28."

http://www.simonsays.com/content/book.cfm?pid=536518&tab=1&agid=2

I am not aware of any occasion when Gloria has been involved in supporting the Republican Party or GOP candidates fundraising or campaigns.

6. Gloria made her money singing in Spanish first.
English came later when she crossed over into pop. I mean she sings a lot better in Spanish than Brittany would. Come to think of it, she sings better than Brittany in English or any number of pop divas currently making the rounds.

9. First off, it's "Britney", not "Brittany"
Secondly, Mariah Carey has a voice that would blast Gloria off the planet, in ANY language.

Finally, why *should* Britney sing in Spanish, when she's not of Hispanic descent? I'm sure Gloria couldn't sing too well in Korean....

My bad. Uh, the OP was about Gloria, not Mariah, whom I have never heard try to do a song in Spanish, or Korean for that matter. At least Gloria can sing in two languages, but I'm not really defending her as an artist, just pointing out a few facts in comparing her with the Britney artist. I'm not a fan of pop music anyway. I prefer classical and opera, which btw is sung in many languages and I will put my favorite opera singers up against Gloria, Mariah and Britney any day.

12. Speaking as a fan, I prefer when Gloria sings in Spanish.
Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 05:03 AM by Apollo11
My understanding of the Spanish language is limited, to say the least.

But I absolutely love to hear Gloria Estefan singing in Spanish.

What turned me on to her music was hearing the Spanish version of "Oyé Mi Canto" in 1989.

Then in 1993 she released "Mi Tierra". I would say it's her best album.

Since then she has released 3 more all-Spanish albums.

This year she brought out "90 Millas". It's wonderful! B-)

Gloria has done enough work for good causes to prove that she is a decent human being.

Gloria's father was an anti-Castro fighter. But that doesn't make Gloria some kind of fascist.

The fact that Gloria expressed support for President Bush on the first anniversary of 9/11 (before the start of the Iraq War) does not make her any different from most Democrats in the US Congress.

In any case I enjoy listening to her music. I am not asking her for policy advice.

So if anyone has a problem with my music tastes - they can "shove it!" B-)
