What Are You Thankful For?
Even in the darkest days there are things, lsrge & small, to be thankful for. You could be thankful you're not a member of the * family, Rudy's wife or Judy's husband...and so on. It might be that despite all the messes in the world there are wonderful things such a plumpy nuts and, your own belovedfamily.

'In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for. As for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican.'

- H.L. Mencken

6. My Wife
of 33 years for without her I would either be dead or passed out in a gutter somewhere. I guess I should be thankful for my good looks instead of just taking them for granted. A wonderful career in the Navy and the nice pension that the wonderful tax payers of our country present to me on the first of every month. I am the last in my immediate family but my in laws are without a doubt God Sent to me. Also the opportunity to give to charities of my choice. Not alot but often. Great question and thanks for asking.

Thanks for the chance to refocus on this Tuesday morning. The sun is out. Our neighbors are raking leaves and we had it done for us already. Our glass is more than half full.

New Page in O'Connors' Love Story: Sandra Day O'Connor's Alzheimer's patient husband finds new love
Source: USA Today

By Joan Biskupic, USA Today
Posted: 2007-11-13

(Nov. 13) -- Retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's husband, who suffers from Alzheimer's, has found a new romance, and his happiness is a relief to his wife, an Arizona TV report reveals. The report, which quoted the couple's oldest son, Scott O'Connor, focused on Alzheimer's patients who forget their spouses and fall in love with someone else. Experts say the scenario is somewhat common.

Offering a glimpse into the private life of a woman who has remained on the public stage since her Supreme Court retirement in 2006 to care for her husband, the report spotlighted John O'Connor, 77. He and the woman, referred to only as "Kay," live at a Phoenix facility for people with Alzheimer's.

"Mom was thrilled that Dad was relaxed and happy and comfortable living here and wasn't complaining," Scott, 50, told KPNX-Channel 12 in Phoenix in a story that aired Thursday. The station is owned by Gannett, as is USA TODAY.

Though Sandra Day O'Connor, 77, did not appear in the television report, it gave a rare look at the life of the nation's first female justice. The family's willingness to highlight an aspect of a heart-wrenching illness recalled O'Connor's decision in 1994 to go public with her feelings about breast cancer. In a speech to the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, she spoke about discovering the cancer in 1988 and undergoing a mastectomy....

What is the most treasured possession you own?

Now, would you sacrifice that possession to insure the one you love has what he/she needs?

What if that possession is actually the act of loving itself?

28. Quiet evenings at my place after a long day/week of work...
Quiet evenings at my place after a long day/week of work. Throw a log onto the fire, light a few candles, put the water on to boil and finally relax on my sofa, idling the hours with a well-intentioned book whilst playing whatever music moves me at the moment.

I'm also thankful that I'm still single-- after seeing every single friend of mine (the group of us have been hanging out for over twenty years) getting a divorce or planning to (with one exception out of the eight of them), I'm *very* thankful I never mistook the New Car smell of a relationship for actual love.

I'm thankful for my friend at work-- she's aces, and makes the office tolerable and keeps me from shooting myself in the head every morning.

I'm thankful the primaries are closer to being over-- so we can concentrate on the real enemies, instead of calling each other "misguided", "uniformed" or "ignorant". I'll never get used to hearing one progressive say that to another progressive.

It would seem I've set the bar pretty low on what I'm thankful for. So I'm thankful for low bars....

31. Today.
I am thankful for today. I have my family, our home, and I am thankful for that. I am thankful for the land, water, and air around me. The plants and animals. I am thankful for all of this, and do not want to ever take it for granted, for what we have today can be taken away in an instant.

Joseph Bruchac wrote a beautiful poem:

Water Thanks

The drop of water
hangs from the faucet
pulsing, the heart
of the well still beating

I never drink water
Harold Elm told me
even from the sink
without sayin
a prayer of thanks

The drop of water
trembles, holding
the face of all the worlds

Harold Elm existed in a different reality than someone who does not give any thought to the water they drink and use every day. His wife gave thanks for the produce from her garden, and the wild foods she gathered. Mrs. Elm existed in a different reality than those who buy cans of corn from a store shelf. Giving thanks helps define our relationship to life, and the world we exist in.

Thus, thanks for the question!

64. Several Things
Thankful for many things: that I have a home to live in, my two wonderful dogs, that the Era of Horror is nearly over and that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, that even with emotional suffering and being not merely perplexed but totally lost, you can find your way back and live again, that most people are not judging you as harshly as you think or fear they are, that you can always learn, or rebuild, or start again, and that we all live in the moral universe of God. Grateful for an ordinary sense of calm.

76. Hubby came home from the hospital this evening
I was seriously worried that he would not leave alive. As it is, he is very underweight and fragile. But at least he is able to sleep in his own bed tonight, after 2 weeks in the hospital.

He is on dialysis and has a very weak heart which allows fluid to accumulate in his abdomen and around his lungs. There is not much more that the docs can do for him, except to help keep him as comfortable as possible for as long as he wants to live.

The national outlook isn't much to celebrate, but I found a much higher paying job at the start of this year, bought a "new to us" house with plenty of room and lots of yard, my daughters are healthy as horses. I'm truly lucky.

100. For You & All Those Who Are Thankful For Family
The Rose Family
Poem lyrics of The Rose Family by Robert Frost.

The rose is a rose,
And was always a rose.
But now the theory goes
That the apple's a rose,
And the pear is, and so's
The plum, I suppose.
The dear only knows
What will next prove a rose.
You, of course, are a rose
But were always a rose.

109. 'Where Did You Come From, Baby Dear?'

~George MacDonald

Where did you come from, baby dear?
Out of the everywhere into here.

Where did you get your eyes so blue?
Out of the sky as I came through.

What makes the light in them sparkle and spin?
Some of the starry spikes left in.

Where did you get that little tear?
I found it waiting when I got here.

What makes your forehead so smooth and high?
A soft hand stroked it as I went by.

What makes your cheek like a warm white rose?
I saw something better than anyone knows.

Whence that three-cornered smile of bliss?
Three angels gave me at once a kiss.

Where did you get this pearly ear?
God spoke, and it came out to hear.

Where did you get those arms and hands?
Love made itself into hooks and bands.

Feet, whence did you come, you darling things?
From the same box as the cherubs' wings.

How did they all just come to be you?
God thought about me, and so I grew.

But how did you come to us, you dear?
God thought about you, and so I am here.

108. Journey On
Robert Frost (1874–1963)

The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same, 10

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
