2. A lot of the Al Gore "naysayers" WOULD like him to run.
We just live on planet Earth, where he's not running. If you think pointing out what's been screamingly obvious for several months now makes people indecent, you have a bigger problem than just your unhealthy attachment to wishful thinking.

19. I don't think that is true. Some of us would LOVE for him to run, but
have believed him from the beginning when he stated he wasn't interested. I don't think that comes across as smug, just practical.

all his denials, was running--really was going to run--or those who accepted what he said at face value.

3. Yeah - any of you have had the indecency to not agree with mopinko, just shut up already.
It's hard enough, without you being critical of a possible political candidate. I mean it's not like any of the other candidates have been criticized!

33. Hey, Crispi!
I got it twice -- once as an organizer and once as part of the America for Gore Steering Committee. Once would have been quite enough, thank you.

I had already backed off quite a bit to work on Nancy Skinner's campaign, but this still hit me like a ton of bricks. If I were still as heavily involved as I had been, it would have been worse, so I'm glad I have another campaign to occupy my time and my mind.

Why the hell would he keep up with the "no plans", knowing how many people were hoping that his failure to just frickin say "I'm not running" already meant something... all those people hoping, and working for that hope.

Yeah, I'm pissed off at him now. All that effort... wasted.

But I, like you, wish that he had sort of leaked this kind of word to the Draft Gore folks a little earlier than he did.

I'm not blaming him, though. I think that the rumors probably helped him bring attention to the climate crisis, and I'll be glad to be a party to ANYTHING that helps bring about change for this oh-so-crucial issue.

I guess I'm getting used to the candidate I support NOT winning, and have become somewhat habituated to tilting at windmills.

So -- :grouphug: take a short break and then get back up on that horse! They only win when we stop fighting and lie down and turn into the little boring consumerist robots they want us to be! The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step! Fall down seven times, stand up eight! :D

36. he never ever said anything like that. never.
he has been gracious and kind to all of his supporters. he may have gotten sick of the media people, and may have let out the occasional sigh. but he has never been the kind of smug jerk that so many around here have been.

he likes to quote the african proverb- if you have to go quickly, go alone. if you have to go far, go together. we have to go far, quickly. iow, he does not want to be left alone. he wants us with him. wherever he leads, although i am a feeling a little jilted right now, i will follow. my hurt feelings right now do not amount to a hill of beans. he is my leader already. our task is to large. and our choice is clear.

I wish he were running but I knew months ago he wasn't. And for months have been reading...."well, maybe what he really meant was blah, blah, blah" and "he didn't SAY absolutely, positively beyond a shadow of a doubt I'm not running, blah blah blah".

Maybe if people don't want to hear the I told you so's they should try living on planet earth and give up reading what they want to read between the lines.

Even now I saw where someone posted..."maybe he's going to take the initiative himself." geez...get a grip

I really don't care who you support....I just hope it's someone actually RUNNING.

59. I am not being disrespectful. What was disrespectful there?
People who regularly post in pro-Gore-candidacy threads to tell us that we are delusional or can't understand English are disrespectful.

Asking me to stop advocating for the best country *I* can conceive us IS disrespectful, and to everyone. You all wanted passion and activism - well, here is mine. Oops, guess that wasn't what was asked for, after all.

People who are obviously very intelligent, but continue to claim to not understand the meaning of "not issuing a Sherman statement" are disrespectful to their reading comprehension instructors.

I don't normally post in these threads, if anyone would go back to check on that. Feel free. But the amount of people here who have shown up in pro-Gore candidacy threads with demeaning and ugly, and sometimes seemingly personal attacks, is absolutely disrespectful and, frankly, uncalled for, in this place where I was under the impression that we were all headed in the same direction - the rescue of our Democracy as embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights, as well as the rescue of the actual living earth, of which our continent is but one small part of.

The OP asked for a cease-fire for one damn day from the circular firing squad that these people seem intent on locking into place.

I would never have asked for the opposite on a thread of the opposite sentiment. If Gore had announced today that he was running, I would never have jumped in a thread that was asking me to 'take it easy' on those that had strongly advocated that he was NOT running, and proceeded to (attempt) to bring my point home by posting such an smug and eviscerating remark as the one I originally responded to. And of course that is not the only one on the thread. Lovely restraint.

I don't need to reiterate why I feel that Gore was the best, and only real choice for America and the world. This has been gone over again and again, and I am not keen to come off as just another schill.

It's funny. I rarely post in GD anymore, because of the primary season and <section deleted>. But whenever I come over to offer my honest and non-agenda-induced opinion (yes, no agenda, I'm not going to change Gore's mind and I actually am open to several other candidates)I am either a delusional dumb stripper who must be saved from her damaging ways to society, or disrespectful for stating what I think is best for my beloved country and the loving world.

Mr.Gore as a person, public and private, is the best embodiment of what our Founding Fathers would have wanted for this America, and what is greater, for the world. He is not a deified person, but yet a great example of what the human spirit can aspire to become; having been purged by fire and tested in the wilderness of isolation and loneliness. Joseph Campbell would have been excited to see the archetypes in motion.

I will not post mercilessly in threads about Gore to defend my position again and again. I do not feel that, when I do post, I am wasting my time. So rest assured that when I do, I've thought about it, oh, just a bit.

And I have never, in my adult life, ever been accused of being disrespectful. But I REFUSE to apologize for wanting what is best for the WORLD, and the country. So, you won't see me promising to not post what I feel the most passionately about. But I dare you to go back and find where I've antagonized those who said Gore was not running time and time again. You won't find it from me.

Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 03:30 AM by lildreamer316
Or, you can ignore attempts to be controlled, which is the best response to those you feel are trying to control you anyway. If you felt this OP was an attempt to control, responding just gave it right to them.

Yes, I am aware of how this applies to myself. The OP does not control me, but I felt the need to show some support.

It's the OP's right to ask that the place he feels most comfortable to express his deep dissapointment, and the most appropriate one considering the subject matter, not beat him over the head with sticks, metaphorically. You have the right to respond that you will opine as you please, but the intent was not to control. It was a simple request.

I love Al Gore. But the simple fact is he's not running, and there's nothing indecent about saying so.

If you think somebody choosing not to run for President is in any way like a family funeral, YOU need to grow up.

68. maybe you missed the whole point.
i was hoping for the naysayers not to be assholes about the draft groups being asked to stop. i was surprised that the story didn't seem to go any farther than it did. i figured it would be the talk of du, at least for the day. and i expected people to be jerks, as some have been.
although i have found the wet blankets to be tiresome, they rarely bothered me that much. i just wanted a little decency on what appeared to be "official throw in the towel day".

69. and as I tried to say
your expectation was unreasonable. Because somebody has said that they didn't believe Gore would run it doesn't make them an asshole, a wet blanket, or indecent.

Expecting thousands of other people to conform to your unreasonable standards is just silly. The easier thing to do would be to control YOURSELF and stay off DU for a day. Instead, you'd rather try to control everybody else, then bitch when you don't get your petty way.

70. hey, i figured the worst that could happen was
that i would be able to update my ignore list. thanks for reminding me that you belong on it.
i am in no way surprised that you would completely miss the whole point, and be an ass about it. this is my community, too, and i have no intention of allowing the hopeless clods to chase me off.

71. Ah
the old ignore - the last refuge of the petulant.

You missed MY point - that you have no reasonable expectation of controlling what thousands of other people do. You COULD, however, control yourself and log off for a day.

Some people TRY to be disappointed.

76. I just can't give up hope that he's going to jump in
I don't believe an email from one person that says Gore doesn't want help getting on the California primary ballot.

Many of us get emails sometimes from someone using our identities -- emails that we never sent.

Or it could be from someone without permission from higher up (i.e. Al himself).

I will cling to hope until it becomes absolutely clear that he won't run -- and not until then.

77. it's over when al himself or dylan malone say it is.
i really expected there to be a flood of news after this email. the fact that there has been none makes me go hmmmmm.....
dylan is the driving force of the movement, and a friend of al's. when he tells me to give it up, i will. till then this email smells a little funny now that i have had time to think about it.
