You'd think there would be some statute to at least slow him down.

It's a pretty big house, on nearly four acres. Residents here say they rarely see the owner, but believe he lives here alone and works as an executive in the liquor industry. They also tell us that, unless he's making beverages in the basement, there's no reason he should be using so much water.

1. The lawn probably has a sprinkler system.
Four acres is a lot of lawn to water. He's certainly not using 390k gallons taking showers and doing dishes.

2. Pretty sure that's not it. The neighbors would've reported him long ago.
There was a recent story about an argument over lawn watering that escalated. The lawn waterer ended up dead.

They are pretty desperate right now. I can't imagine they would've missed sprinklers.

Unless he's got the whole 4 acres on soaker hoses????

6. Could be a pool, though it would have to be a big one.
An Olympic-sized pool would hold that kind of volume, but he'd have to empty and refill it every month to consume that much water.

10. I used to clean pools that size...
If it's a big pool eating up that water, either he has a big leak, or he's not recycling the water when he vacuums the dirt and dust off the bottom of the pool.

12. Agreed.
To use that much water, he'd almost have to be draining and refilling it once a month or so. 390,000 gallons is an enormous amount of water.

3. There's a right to life mentioned in the Constitution but not a right to a green lawn.
Maybe the rich and powerful can get an amendment pushed through.

If I was governor of Georgia, this would come to an end quickly.

I suppose they are relying on the power of prayer instead of using the brains that God gave us.

7. 4 acres?
If I calculate correctly, that's about 1.2 acre-feet of water he is using on his 4 acres. That's .3 feet of water per acre, or about 4" a month. That must be some lawn! I don't think golf courses in Phoenix and Las Vegas use that much water.

8. A lot of lawn service people suggest an inch a week (not in drought areas, of course!)
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 09:33 AM by TwilightZone
So, if your calculations are accurate, that's about what this guy is using.

It is, of course, highly irresponsible and selfish to be doing so in the middle of a drought.

9. An inch a week?
What kind of idiotic suggestion is that? That's 52" a year! There are verdant grasslands that do well on half of that in natural rainfall, like half of Kansas.

I suppose it never occurs to these idiots that if you get an inch of rain, you don't have to water for the next 7 days. :dunce:

11. An inch a week is pretty much the standard
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 10:34 AM by TwilightZone
If you do a Google search for "how much should I water my lawn", the majority of the suggestions are an inch a week, including natural rainfall. That's also what I've generally heard from clients and acquaintances in the industry. Many types of lawn grass need a ton of water, especially if it's being fertilized and/or the location has hot, sunny summers.

Re: does it occur to them not to water if it rains - probably not. Most people have them on a timer and don't adjust them if it rains.

13. Xeriscaping lynch mob
People like this jackass who follow that advice are going to have to go into hiding soon. I have heard of militant xeriscapers based out of Las Vegas and Phoenix that are threatening to put wastrels like this on inclined boards with their feet elevated and leave them out under their own sprinklers.
