voted on after the August recess? You know the ones...those that got pushed back to be voted on in October in order that the leadership could explain the vote to the Democratic Congresspersons. The same ones that we were told two weeks ago that a majority in the House supported?
It's NOVEMBER 13. No contempt vote has been taken.
Of course, the Senate is taking up the slack. NOT. We were told that the judiciary wouldn't even schedule hearings for an Attorney General until the subpoenaed materials were handed in. They weren't. The hearings went ahead, anyway. The Democrats had enough opposition to Mukasey to filibuster him, and stop his confirmation. They didn't stop it. We still don't have the subpoenaed materials, and no hearings have been scheduled to deal with it. No contempt charges forthcoming in the Senate, either, it looks like.
Oh, and we are told the reason for the confirmation of the AG was to get Bush to agree not to veto a military spending bill (over $400 billion dollars worth) that did not include money for the war in Iraq. That's to provide political cover for when, in a few weeks, they pass another 50 billion dollars to fund the war because "we don't have the votes to stop a veto." Our intelligence is being insulted. We know that no funding bills have to come to the floor for a vote.
In the meantime, a FISA bill that seems to legalize warrantless wiretaps on Americans was passed. An AG was confirmed who is so inept that he doesn't know whether waterboarding is torture, or not. The Iraq War goes on full bore. The administration is beating the war drums for Iran. And, even though the majority in the House told the Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment hearings, Nancy Pelosi is pressuring Conyers (or, maybe not--perhaps he's doing it on his own and Nancy is taking the hit for him) not to schedule impeachment hearings.
Impeachment is still off the table, but immunity for the telecoms is still on the table.
And, what's the "bone" we were thrown that was supposed to ameliorate our anger--"Hey, we got a minimum wage bill passed for the first time in a decade," (one that is far too little far too late.)
Gasoline prices are over $3.00 a gallon. The economy is headed for the crapper. The country is headed for multi-TRILLION dollar deficits. And, war criminals are allowed to run free all over the White House.
But, hey, I'm not one to try and just point out the negative and keep us all eternally depressed. Let's look at the bright side...we've managed to elect the first ever Speaker of the House who is female.
Too bad that's all she'll be remembered for...that, and capitulation to the Bush administration every time he gets a fart caught sideways up his ass.
Everybody have a good day, now!
