Best to use tools when loosening lug nut
Best to use tools when loosening lug nut
Mon Nov 12, 6:12 PM ET

SOUTHWORTH, Wash. - A man trying to loosen a stubborn lug nut blasted the wheel with a 12-gauge shotgun, injuring himself badly in both legs, sheriff's deputies said.

The 66-year-old man had been repairing a Lincoln Continental for two weeks at his home northwest of Southworth, about 10 miles southwest of Seattle, and had gotten all but one of the lug nuts off the right rear wheel by Saturday afternoon, Kitsap County Deputy Scott Wilson said.

"He's bound and determined to get that lug nut off," Wilson said.

From about arm's length, the man fired the shotgun at the wheel and was "peppered" in both legs with buckshot and debris, with some injuries as high as his chin, according to a sheriff's office report...

2. You know, I had to help a young lady change a tire last month...
She couldn't get the lug nuts off of the wheel. They clearly had been put on pneumatically. It took a long time to get them off, and I ended up really up hurting myself in the process. At no time during my frustrated attempt did I think, "You know, I could really use a shotgun right now."

4. I really got a laugh out of your post
Don't know way it struck me so, but it did.

I usually end up getting that lug wrench horzontal (pointing at about the 9:00 position) then jumping on the fucker. Sad, but true.

6. I was asked for a car jack by a man behind a gas station as I was filling up on the way to work.
I had my son with me. I finished topping off the tank and went over to his car to ask if he still needed help. I drove back home, only about 7 blocks, and came back with a floor jack, jack stand and a 4 way lug wrench. I jacked his car up, he was clueless, and placed the jack stand. He took the 4 way and couldn't loosen a single bolt. I ended up taking the tire off and putting the spare on. He looked at me as I was putting the jack back in the truck and said "thanks" and jumped in his car and drove away.

No offer of money or even a handshake. Maybe I am old fashion, but I would have offered a person something. I would probably told him to "fergetaboutit". It is just the principle of the thing. At the very least I would have thanked anyone who helped me PROFUSELY and offered a hearty handshake.

In this case I merely had a great opportunity to instill my values and traditions on my son. He understands that a handshake is more than just a pressing of the flesh. It is a man's word and bond and a major sign of respect and thanks....at least to me and hopefully mine.

As for karma, that very day I got popped by the street cleaners and had my car towed. No good turn goes unpunished.

I'd do it all again.

10. I would have offered money!
Reminds me of when I ran out of gas (first time in my life) outside of Leesburg, VA, which is an affluent area (Republican exurb would be my guess - not true blue like Arlington or Falls Church). I called a friend and AAA to rescue me and waited. And waited and waited, as luxury sedans and SUVs whizzed by. Who stopped to help? Three guys from El Salvador in a car that truly looked to be on its last leg. They drove about 10 miles to some box store and bought a little gas can, filled it up, then drove back to me. I offered cash, but they wouldn't accept a dime. Hope their good deed went unpunished! (Sorry about the pop...)

3. Like attracts like
Two definitions of "lug:"

1. A projecting part of a larger piece that helps to provide traction, as on a tire or the sole of a boot.
2. Slang. A clumsy fool; a blockhead.
