Fans United for Writer's -- NO CHRISTMAS DVDs
Hey Guys,

Check this out from Daily Kos -- Black Friday is coming up next week -- let's circle the wagons and hit the studios where it counts most -- their wallets.

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/11/12/145358/55

Christmas Buying Pledge (and it will extend to after the Christmas Season or until the strike ends)

1. I will not buy any DVDs or Blue Ray Discs
2. I will not watch any FREE streaming shows of 'The Office' or any other content on the networks websites
3. I will not download any episodes from Itunes or any pay site

Please pass this around and let's stand together with the writer's this Holiday Season.

If Black Friday isn't so Black, maybe that will send the producer's back to the table and provide a great Holiday gift to ALL of Hollywood -- JOBS.

Best,

Dems

6. what indeed?
Disc One
RIDLEY SCOTT'S ALL-NEW "FINAL CUT" VERSION OF THE FILM

Restored and remastered with added & extended scenes, added lines, new and cleaner special effects and all new 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio. Also includes:

- Commentary by Ridley Scott

- Commentary by Executive Producer/ Co-Screenwriter Hampton Fancher and Co-Screenwriter David Peoples; Producer Michael Deely and production executive Katherine Haber

- Commentaries by visual futurist Syd Mead; production designer Lawrence G. Paull, art director David L. Snyder and special photographic effects supervisors Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich and David Dryer

Disc Two
DOCUMENTARY - DANGEROUS DAYS: MAKING BLADE RUNNER

A feature-length authoritative documentary revealing all the elements that shaped this hugely influential cinema landmark. Cast, crew, critics and colleagues give a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at the film -- from its literary roots and inception through casting, production, visuals and special effects to its controversial legacy and place in Hollywood history.

Disc Three
1982 THEATRICAL VERSION

This is the version that introduced U.S. movie-going audiences to a revolutionary film with a new and excitingly provocative vision of the near-future. It contains Deckard/Harrison Ford's character narration and has Deckard and Rachel's (Sean Young) "happy ending" escape scene.

1982 INTERNATIONAL VERSION

Also used on U.S. home video, laserdisc and cable releases up to 1992. This version is not rated, and contains some extended action scenes in contrast to the Theatrical Version.

1992 DIRECTOR'S CUT

The Director's Cut omits Deckard's voiceover narration and removes the "happy ending" finale. It adds the famously-controversial "unicorn" sequence, a vision that Deckard has which suggests that he, too, may be a replicant.

Disc Four
BONUS DISC - "Enhancement Archive"

- Featurette The Electric Dreamer: Remembering Philip K. Dick
- Featurette Sacrificial Sheep: The Novel vs. The Film
- Philip K. Dick: The Blade Runner Interviews (Audio)
- Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Cover Gallery (Images)
- The Art of Blade Runner (Image Galleries)
- Featurette Signs of the Times: Graphic Design
- Featurette Fashion Forward: Wardrobe & Styling
- Screen Tests: Rachel & Pris
- Featurette The Light That Burns: Remembering Jordan Cronenweth
- Unit Photography Gallery
- Deleted & Alternate Scenes
- 1982 Promotional Featurettes
- Trailers & TV Spots
- Featurette Promoting Dystopia: Rendering the Poster Art
- Marketing & Merchandise Gallery (Images)
- Featurette Deck-A-Rep: The True Nature of Rick Deckard
- Featurette Nexus Generation: Fans & Filmmakers

Disc Five
WORKPRINT VERSION

This rare version of the film is considered by some to be the most radically different of all the Blade Runner cuts. It includes an altered opening scene, no Deckard narration until the final scenes, no "unicorn" sequence, no Deckard/Rachel "happy ending," altered lines between Batty (Rutger Hauer) and his creator Tyrell (Joe Turkell), alternate music and much more.

Also includes:

- Commentary by Paul M. Sammon, author of Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner
- Featurette All Our Variant Futures: From Workprint to Final Cut

You can get a 2 disc set with discs 1 and 2, 4 disc set or 5 disc set on standard dvd, HD DVD, and Blu Ray.

It's on sale starting Dec 18, so no Black Friday worries there.

7. I read the book about a year ago.
Years ago I was at the Los Angeles County Fair where they filmed the airbus vehicle scene. I happen to have a Philip K. Dick quote on my lobby board I put up last week, "Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane."

Too bad he isn't around to see his work come to life in such an extraordinary way.

10. It's not a one-off -- But hope it begins before then
Agreed, which is why I'm not suggesting a one-off, but rather 'no DVDs this Christmas' period.

9. I'm supporting hollywood writers the same way they support working people throughout this country.
That is to say, not at all.

12. That's helpful...NOT
Let's see, we've got Lions for Lambs and Rendition that are out right now, and the movie industry performers overwhelmingly support liberal causes (heck, even the producers do...)

Personally, I loved Roseanne's show, which really showcased a working class family scraping by in an amusing way...

But regardless of all of that, I support workers and unions. And NOT supporting the writers means that I'd be standing with:

GE and NBC

FOX and Rupert Murdoch

ABC and Disney

CBS and Viacom

So, at the very least, I would think that 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend.'

What the writer's are asking for makes perfect sense to me, a percentage of profits of their work product regardless of medium. It doesn't make money, they don't get money, it makes money, they get some.

The thing is, because these folks are part of the Hollywood system and celebrities are standing with them, it makes folks pay a bit more attention and gets a teeny bit more play than the average workers strike.

And we need more workers strikes and we need to have liberal organizations supporting strikes. The progressive blogosphere should be joining forces with striking workers when the corporations are trying to f them over...that will showcase our power and maybe it will put some actual fear in corporations.

Paul Krugman's recent book said that the difference between America and Canada/Europe is that our union movement is much less strong. Consequently, we have larger and larger gaps between rich and poor and no safety net for workers.

Unions, for all of their ills, are our best bet of making sure all of us get our fair share for our labor.

That's what the writers are striking over.
