My favorite Norman Mailer moment: His putdown of wannabe intellectual Dennis Miller
First, mailer wrote an article for the London Times (I can't find the link):

---
Then Miller wrote this piece of crap for the Wall St. Journal in response. Apparently, he thought being an M&Ms pitchman qualified him to match wits with one of the greatest literay minds in America. But no amount of pop culture references, can hide the fact that he was dead wrong and history has proven him so.
http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110003453
---
Then Mailer knocked Dennis out with these few, yet direct, words:

Dear Dennis,

Just because the two big guys who flanked you on Monday Night Football took away your balls and left you with a giggle in replacement doesn't mean you have to suck up to The Wall Street Journal.

But thanks for appreciating my fine use of "keen."

Keen up, then, to my piece and read it again without panic. You're too good to become squalid and kiss-ass for so little.

Cheers, blessings,

Norman Mailer
Provincetown, Mass.

2. Oh, but how Miller became the squalid kiss ass he is. He failed so many times.
I can't say I blame him, because everyone has his point of breaking. I think Miller is shit now, and that is the price he paid. He is good at Fox, and fuck him in the real world.

I have to watch commercials for his show when I'm trying to catch a Rangers game. Amazingly, they advertise for people to apply to appear on the show.

lots of sexually violent drivel without which the world would be at least a little bit better of a place.

Fuck Mailer.

10. while Miller is bothersome and often wrong
I still don't agree with Mailer's point about the "white men needing a victory." It's just dumb.

14. Mailer's chronology was wrong.
To use a more delicate term, Dennis Miller's "manhood" was gone long before his miserable sports commentator job. It was gone when he did Saturday Night Live, when he was too "good" to perform in the same sketches that every other performer on the show did. He never had a gift for comedy, really, only being snide.

And if you really look at the SNL sketches over the years, they've progressively grown more right-wing. They were the original "Pants-Down Republicans" who snorted coke and cheered Reagan.

15. SNL went to shit when Mike O'Donahue left as writer
It's had a few moments of brillance since (late 80s Hartman/Franken/Carvey), but overall sucks
I've seen recent SNL sketches supporting rw myths such as "The War on Christmas" and making fun of antiwar demonstrations. It's quite depressing

16. He has delusions of being Stephen Colbert. Miller doesn't see color
Only black and white

" He then goes on to speak about racial subsets in the world of sports. Now, when I watch baseball, football and basketball, I see uniforms and skills. Mr. Mailer evidently sees races and nationalities. "

17. OMG, it get's even more ridiculous
Edited on Mon Nov-12-07 06:12 AM by cuke
After saying he doesn't see color, he says "Ironically, Mr. Mailer seems to see everything in the world in terms of black and white, except of course, good and evil."

And then it ends with:

" it must be hellish for someone who can still arrange words so beautifully--i.e., "the question will keen in pitch"--to wake up every morning and have it slowly dawn on him that he's effectively been rendered totally irrelevant. "

The has been COMEDIAN calls Mailer "irrelevant"

18. I disagree with the Journal.
It identified Dennis as a "comedian."

Then again, looking at this editorial years later, I feel perhaps they were right. "Sugar Ray Bush's TWKO (Three-Week Knock-Out)"? Now THAT's funny!...Well, actually, it's not funny at all.

I still can't make up my mind.

24. It's crap like this...
...that makes me want to stab Dennis Miller to death:

"...Normy's connecting through Atlanta and flying on prop planes to a community college that's so far out in the sticks the mail rider has yet to arrive with the message that The Great Mailer is currently more out of the loupe than a jeweler with conjunctivitis..."

"...I don't want to appear to pick more nits than a father-and-son Spider Monkey team who know they're being followed by a National Geographic film crew..."

I've never liked him. Even back in the day before he became a right-winger I couldn't stand to listen to his schtick because he just sounded like an idiot. Too much of his crap sounded like the above quotes. And he always had that smug look on his face while reciting this shit. Ugh.
