Ex-Congressman Sweeney Busted For Aggravated DWI
Posted on Sunday, 11 of November , 2007 at 8:03 pm

CLIFTON PARK—Former Republican Congressman John Sweeney of Clifton Park has been charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop about 1:20 a.m. Sunday on the Adirondack Northway in Saratoga County near exit 8A.

State Police say Sweeney was operating a vehicle which nearly struck their police cruiser as they were responding to an unrelated call. Sweeney’s blew a .18, more than twice the state’s legal threshold of .08 blood alcohol content.

Police said that there was a young female in the car with Sweeney.

He is being represented by Troy attorney E. Stewart Jones. He has no prior DWI convictions.

Sweeney is scheduled to appear in Clifton Park Town Court on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. to be arraigned on the misdemeanor offenses of driving while intoxicated and aggravated DWI and a traffic infraction of unsafe lane change.

In 2006, New York passed a new law establishing the offense of aggravated DWI which is applicable when the BAC is .18 or higher. When a driver is charged with aggravated DWI, the chances of plea bargaining down to a traffic infraction or a violation, a non-crime, are virtually impossible.

The mandatory fine range for aggravated DWI is $1,000 to $2,500 and conviction carries a mandatory driver’s license revocation of at least one year. A jail sentence of up to one year can also be imposed.

Sweeney lost his Congressional seat last year to Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand and claimed that her political camp was responsible for leaking a police report of a domestic violence call made on Dec. 2, 2005, by Sweeney’s wife. The call played a pivotal role in Sweeney’s campaign.

10. Don't worry.
If they speak about this at all, they'll be sure to defend their man by bringing up the Kennedy/Chappaquidick tragedy from almost 40 years ago.

6. That's a pretty juicy link
Nice family!

"When Sweeney’s son, John Jr., was charged with second degree assault as a result of a fight in Stillwater on Aug. 19, 2004, which seriously injured the victim, he turned to Troy attorney E. Stewart Jones. Although his son could have faced up to seven years in prison for the vicious assault, he walked, escaping all jail time.In a rare action, in December 2005, Republican Fulton County Judge Richard Giardino reversed his earlier decision to sentence Sweeney Jr., then 19, and John J. Manupella of Troy, also 19, to jail for a brutal assault of another teen last year which fractured the victim’s skull and left the victim with long-term vision damage and recurring nightmares.""

4. He WAS my congressman!
What a sleeze, he has a drinking problem, this wasn't the first time. One of the reasons he lost was for slapping around his wife. They both denied it at the time but now they are divorcing. This was wife #two.

13. K&R, I don't care if this is a dupe... We need to spread this news as much as possible!
This guy was my congressman, as well... Was finally defeated in 2006 after numerous embarrassing incidents. The local paper once said that he could "have the job for life, if he wanted it.":eyes: Are there no limits to the depths to which he'll sink?!
