Mike Huckabee is religiously insane
This one frightens me the most (yes, moreso than Ghouliani). He has been recognized as having a smooth approach, and has even made nice statements about the Clintons (which is a no no for the Republicans). But, however, he has stated that he is the most qualified to fight what he calls a "theocratic war" because he has a theology degree. Huckabee is mixing in the "terror terror" message with "Islamo fascism" rhetoric. Throw in the theology degree, and Huckabee is essentially saying we are in a holy war.

This guy is nuts, folks. He's no pretender. Don't let the smooth talk fool you. This is the candidate the fundies will hail as the new savior. Scary.

1. I respect Huckabee's accomplishment regarding obesity and fitness, and that's
all I'll give him.

Everything else about him is appalling. I'm on board with everything you said.

2. I've been saying this for quite a while now
He's slick. He comes across as the world's nicest guy, and so reasonable.

Until you actually listen to what he says. Unfortunately, most people don't do that.

He's a reactionary, right-wing biblical literalist, theocratic-leaning idealogue. He's dangerous.

But a whole lot of people will listen to him talk, think "oh he seems like a nice enough guy" and get suckered.

5. Exactly. Very smooth
He'll smile, attempt to say something hip, praise the Clintons for raising a wonderful child, and disarm your concerns with a nice statement on something somewhat progressive. He initially doesn't appear to be a nut, but when you delve deeper, you see a truly religiously insane person.

Too lazy to post the link. His statement about his theology degree giving him the best experience to deal with the ME scared the shit out of me.

4. He's also got a reasonable record as governor
which is why he's going to be their candidate.

The fundies will vote for him because he's the Messiah the false prophet in the White House now was supposed to be.

He's the best of that pack and yes, he is very dangerous.

Democratic candidates had better relearn how to speak to the party base if they want to win this one. Speaking to Wall Street aint gonna do it. Again.

He matches up best against Hillary, so he's very dangerous. His policies are moderate belying his total lunacy. A dangerous man.

30. Dangerous?
I admit I'm a little confused on the christian/dangerous thing floating around here.

I consider myself a Christian, as I'm sure many Dems do. So when I hear that Christian = dangerous, I'm confused. What is it about being a Christian that makes him dangerous? And what is it specifically that you are afraid he might do if he were president (I mean other than what the typical RW'er wants to do).

Thanks.

31. To my mind, anyone who thinks the earth is only 6000 years old...
and denies evolution, is so irrational that his thinking process is not reliable. A president should have some contact with reality. People who cite biblical reasons for opposing human rights, reproductive rights, scientific research, academic freedom, or environmental policy are, in my opinion, dangerous.

I didn't say that Christians are dangerous per se. I am aware that policy-wise Huckabee has been somewhat moderate, although he does support war policy, and for a so-called Christian, he doesn't mind torture much. That perceived populism makes him more electable and is why I predicted his success months ago, when he was at >3%.

Lest my secular buddies think I'm slipping, I'll happily go on record as saying that anybody who supports public policy based on faith over facts is a danger to society. Hopefully that doesn't include you. :)

34. He's a Baptist preacher and a biblical literalist.
He said at a debate that he doesn't believe in evolution. To my mind, not good presidential material.

I co-exist happily with all sorts of theistic beliefs, but the founders thought it not a good basis for governance. I think that's a good idea. I haven't heard Huckabee's specific position on it, but what are the ramifications of having a president who believes in the rapture?

7. I've been saying Huckabee is the most rigid and narrow in his views of all Repubs....
He comes off amusing, but his positions are not open to even the tiniest compromise.

He would impose his narrow view of the world in a take no prisoners way.

People voting for him will get something entirely different than they thought.

13. See! There is a perfect example
I remember one of Al Franken's books when he talked about Ralph Reed. Reed could disarm you with talk about the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's album, totally knocking you off guard. Then you start to think, "Hey, Ralph isn't some religious nut." But that's the approach of charismatics such as Reed and Huckabee, and it could work for Huckabee with some voters who may consider themselves moderates.

22. So what? Most people in their 50's like classic rock--hell, my dad's 65
and has played rockin' guitar all his life. I find it odd that people find this some sort of hip, cool "quirk" of Huckabee's--what is he supposed to like, classical?

23. UH no, it isn't about how cool or hip he is....

it's that Led Zeppelin has been the subject of a lot of controversy over the years because of Jimmy Page's interest in Alistair Crowley, and because of the supposed satanic backwards messages on stairway to heaven. He is quite the evangelical right wing Christian. Those kinds of things tend to matter to his crowd, so yes, it is a bit of a surprise that he listens to Led Zeppelin. Less of a shock would have been if he listened to the Beatles or the Who.

Does that explain it simply enough for you, or do you just have fun pointing out what you mistakenly think is my naivete?

24. Don't take offense--just didn't get your point. I don't think Huckster
is either smart enough to realize that about Page, or probably doesn't care. Zeppelin's music is so old and ubiquitous now, I don't think it would carry a stigma or be controversial anymore for the Christian crowd.

12. No different from Santorum
Religious conservative extremism wrapped up in a non-threatening package. Smiles a lot, speaks softly, is batshit fucking nuts. I'm pretty sure that whoever is at the top of their ticket, he will be the V-P.

In one sentence he said he didn't understand Pat Robertson's endorsement of Giuliani any more than praying a hurricane away from the Atlantic seaboard, and then said he wished he had received his endorsement.

Huck is crazy and he's stupid, unlike Ron Paul, who's just nuts.

With the Religious Right so fragmented right now, I don't think Huck has a snowball's chance in heck of getting the nom. No one besides a religious loony would vote for him.

18. Been saying this for a while. Remember, he thinks God helps him hunt
by guiding the bullets to the prey. He thinks the Lord wants him in the WH--there is a fellow preacher out there who is promoting the idea that Huckabee was "ordained by God" to be President. And yet, he's crooked and a known liar--not even close to the uber-Christian that he presents himself to be. Thank God he's stupid. His mouth will get him into trouble.
