"Video Shows Shocking Killing Of Animals" - By a vet at city animal shelter
"Video Shows Shocking Killing Of Animals"
Some residents of Sumner County are demanding a vet with the city's animal shelter be fired.

Undercover video shows Dr. Bill Baber performing inhumane and illegal euthanizations on animals.

Concerned citizens and animal lovers plan to protest in Gallatin Monday afternoon, begging the city government to take action.

Peggy Olea said it is hard for her to even look at the animal control building, tucked away down a long gravel road in Gallatin.

I didn't watch the video, am sure it is not pleasant though.

1. This falls under the "I'll take your word for it"; I won't be watching the video. However, ...
I hope they take care of this person.

2. I did not watch the video...

...because I had to put to sleep our family cat last week.

I was in the room when she received the injection. She went
very quickly and it was very peaceful.

I cannot imagine, as this article says--that this person injected
the animals in the heart to euthanize them. It's just not necessary
to punch them in the heart like that with the needle. The animal
dies within 1 or 2 seconds of being injected the usual way--with
an injection just under the skin.

This man is a sadist. I hope he burns in hell. He obviously
enjoys inflicting pain on helpless animals. He ensures that
their last moments on Earth are full of fear and pain.

I hope the community makes this man's life a living hell.

3. A few years ago, IIRC
it was in this area where the dumpster was used for unwanted pets. There was a national wide protest then, they simply dug in.

4. The video shows improper restraint (dogs being lifted up and

suspended briefly by the scruff of the neck). It also shows what is, IMHO, an inappropriate method of euthanasia (the drug appears to be given by intracardiac injection). None of the dogs appear to be in actual distress, but this video nonetheless indicates a lack of concern for proper procedure, probably as a means of saving time and therefore money.

I'm not sure why the one woman is talking about inadequate anesthesia during ear cropping because this is about what's going on at the county animal shelter, and I can't imagine a shelter performing any ear crops.

I don't know if what he's doing violates any laws in TN. It's NOT good practice in my book.

6. Did not intracardiac
injection used to be an acceptable method of euthanasia? I remember years ago using it on birds at the wildlife rehab center. Nowadays I use iso on the wildlife I get in that cannot be salvaged. It is much more gentle.

10. I think it is generally frowned upon. Yes, it's LIGHTNING-FAST, if
you actually get the drug intracardiac. The problem is if you miss or any drug gets into the chest cavity - that is excruciatingly painful (as opposed to into the abdominal cavity, which is painless - go figure that out).

12. I guess most methods
have their downside depending on the skill of the practicioner. When the vet put my greyhound who had bone cancer down, she blew the vein and my pup started screaming. She had to leave the room and go get another syringe full and do it again. It was pretty traumatic.

13. It happens. When that stuff gets out of the vein, it's horrible.
When I euthanize cats in my practice, I DO NOT give the drug in the vein unless there is already an intravenous CATHETER in place. I just give a big slug of butorphanol and acepromazine in the muscle (yes, it stings a tiny bit), wait 10-15 minutes for it to kick in, and then gove the euthanasia solution in the abdominal cavity.

Yes, it takes longer - the cat very gradually loses consciousness, then the breathing eventually stops, then a few minutes later the heart stops. The up-side is: no struggling to put an IV catheter into an animal that may very well resent it, no IV injection to infiltrate, very gradual and smooth and natural-seeming death. The owner is usually happy at how peacefully and quietly they go. The down-side: it takes a while. But then I'm not running a McDonald's drive-through euthanasia shop here.

7. The ear cropping comes up
as she works with him (per the article) I'm assuming at his private practice (stated in other news sources). He gets $9/animal to perform this illegal form of euthanasia.

11. If he is under contract, the city needs to amend the contract to specify
acceptable and unacceptable methods of euthanasia. At $9 a pop, no wonder he wants to do it as fast and cheap as possible.

Guess it's too important for each of the locals to pay 10c a year more in taxes (or whatever, you get my point) so the vet can be paid a little better and have less incentive to do this. Maybe for an increased fee they might even get a better, more conscientious vet to do it.
