Glenn Beck Re-signs Radio Contract For $50 Mil
A Folksy Guy, in Recovery, Is About to Land Millions

By BRIAN STELTER
Published: November 5, 2007

On his daily radio talk show, Glenn Beck portrays himself as an average guy, a recovering alcoholic and a comedian who regularly injects humor into his conservative politics.

This week he can add another description: very wealthy.

Premiere Radio Networks, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, is expected to announce today that it is extending Mr. Beck’s contract. Two sources with knowledge of the deal said it was valued at $50 million over five years, through a combination of salary and profit-sharing from syndication.

In signing the deal, Mr. Beck, 43, becomes the newest — and youngest — entrant into an exclusive club of highly compensated radio stars. The new contract would make Mr. Beck the third highest-paid talk radio host, surpassed only by Rush Limbaugh, the most popular terrestrial talker for two decades and whose show is also syndicated by Premiere, and Sean Hannity, whose Citadel Broadcasting show is routinely ranked second.

The salaries apparently mirror Arbitron’s radio audience measurements, which show that Mr. Beck is the third most popular radio host in the advertiser-friendly 25- to 54-year-old demographic.

4. How the fuck does that happen?
If oil was rightwing bile, it'd be a nickel a barrel. There's a GLUT of that shit on air already. Are there people who've gotta have it 24/7 and start jonesing in the few lulls between ranters?

11. I think those in power whose agenda Beck et al., serve "gotta have it 24/7"

They're terrified that an informed public might wake up and realize what's really going on. Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh all remind me of that scene at the end of the movie "Network" where Beale meets the head corporate honcho, Arthur Jensen:

Jensen: We no longer live in a worid of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale.
The worid is a college of corporations...inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business.

The worid is a business, Mr Beale. It has been since man crawled out of the slime. And our children will live, Mr Beale, to see that... perfect worid...in which there’s no war or famine, oppressión or brutality. One vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit. In which all men will hold a share of stock, all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquillised, all boredom amused.

And I have chosen you, Mr. Beale, to preach this evangel.

Beale: Why me?

Jensen: Because you’re on televisión, dummy. A million people watch you every night of the week, Monday through Friday.

Beale: I have seen the face of God.

Jensen: You just might be right, Mr Beale.

5. Hate, ignorance and intolerance richly rewarded
Sad indeed. This is what happens in our country when conservative values are unleashed. The three mentioned, beck, limbaugh and hannity could not possibly find employment in any other line of work. Very telling truth about those who huff and puff and pretend to be brave.

10. I was going to post the same thing
As a college professor, I used to tell students to examine a culture by what it values. What does this say about us?

12. Hello MissDeeds
great to have a (another) prof onboard. What I see here in South Mississippi is not so much what people value but what they are told to value; which is even more pathetic. And when it comes to hating liberals, what they are supposed to value can very easily be put on hold. Its as if it is part of a plan.

16. Hey BOSSHOG
I have found apathy and ignorance go hand in hand. One of the biggest challenges I encounter in teaching is getting students to be intellectually curious. So many seem disengaged and feel that they either won't be impacted by national and international affairs or feel that there is nothing they can do to alter events. The sense of futility in the young is very disturbing.

6. Looks like hatemongering is a good gig.
Edited on Mon Nov-05-07 08:58 AM by lpbk2713

They probably know that they have a fucked up way of looking at the world but they also know the money's good. So they keep on keeping on. Beck is a relative Johnny-come-lately to OxyRush and Han-nutty. One can only imagine how much they earn for hatemongering.

14. "Valued"...LOL
Sounds like he got some nice coin, but most of his deal is in both incentives and stock options. Looks great in print but means little on the bottom line. For Beck to make all the money...like an athlete, he has to meet certain performance standards and bonuses...which he will be hard-pressed to make. Plus much of what he is "paid" will be in corporate stock and other "junk"...deferred payments and other gimmicks that could be worthless in a couple years. But, still, the guy will be taking home some good coin for spewing all types of crap.

What's the bigger shame is how many jobs this moron and others have cost as Cheap Channel has replaced local talk and programming with this pablum. Fortunately, the company continues to squander money and faces more financial messes.
