Where fiction meets judicial fancy - Jack Bauer, "24" & Antonin Scalia...
From the Sunday Sac Bee, A20 (a reading while at the bar, a true buzz wrecker; which would have played better in the funny papers imo but for the fact that this is how 'they' think, Oy!)

"If you don't tell me what I want to know, then it'll just be a question of how much you want to hurt." - Jack Bauer, "24"

"Is any jury going to convict Jack Bauer? I don't think so." - Justice Antonin Scalia, U.S. Supreme Court

3. Sutherland is not Bauer
"What happened in Abu Ghraib was just absolutely criminal. And not only was it criminal but it was as a nation it`s going to go in and trying to tell people how to live, which is exactly what we`re doing, and we`re going to tell you that democracy and freedom and this is the way to go, and then go and behave like that. Inexcusable."

"I believe inherently that - that we have a responsibility to take care of each other, so when you can talk about socialized healthcare, absolutely, that`s a no-brainer. Free universities, absolutely, that`s a no-brainer for me. So in the definition, I guess those are leaning towards socialist politics. To me it`s common sense. And I do believe the wealthy have a responsibility to the less fortunate. Some people call that communism. I disagree. Again, it`s common sense. But I would have to say that my politics would be leaning towards the left."

6. In "Fat Tony's" mind he is. Fat Tony talks about him, as though by mentioning his name, he
can conjure the guy up and no jury will convict him, after all!!

To Fat Tony, he IS Sutherland, and Sutherland is Bauer.

Which illustrates, sadly, what a pathetic mess we have on the Supremes bench these days.

And as far as Sutherland is concerned, his socialist leanings only lean so far--he's responsible for the popularization of the callousness and cruelty we see touted these days, and a thoughtful little discussion about the differences between him and his character may be nice, but it sure ain't putting those socialist politics ahead of that paycheck.

Now, that's HIS choice. I'm not suggesting that he "do" anything other than what he does. Far be it from me to nanny the guy; he can live with it, and he's gotta eat--can't live off daddy forever. But I find his angst-filled parsing a bit lame and disingenuous. He knows what his reputation is as a result of the program, and that goes with taking the gig. Ask James Gandolfini.
