"Pit Bull Lovers Hold Talent Show"
"Pit Bull Lovers Hold Talent Show"
Pit bull lovers push to show the good side of the breed.

Dozens of pit bulls, some rescues, from all across the country showed their talents Saturday in Milton.

Volunteer Sharon Sweigart says the event is full of competition.

Sweigart said, “They use their skills that they are made for, they are part of going what they are supposed to do.”
....

One dog in the talent show pulled over 1,025 pounds.

5. thanks for sharing that. one of the most adorable dogs I know is a pit named blue.
one of the nastiest dogs I ever encountered was an obnoxious yorkie, who bit me twice.

11. Duhhh, the dog PULLED 1,025 pounds... not weighed 1000 pounds
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 02:05 PM by hlthe2b

Many humans can pull their weight many fold, so a 125 pound dog pulling that amount of weight, given their musculature would not surprise me. Remember another much smaller (and more acceptable breed for most)--the English Bulldog was bred to take down bulls--literally.

9. Good on them... With knowledgable owners and handling
these can be the most wonderful dogs. They are, indeed, among my favorites, which is saying a lot, as I have worked with and loved dogs my entire life.

Sadly, ignorant, sadistic humans have all but brought down the breed. Good on this group for bringing some sanity to the public discourse and understanding.

12. I find most of the arguments about Pit Bulls unconvincing

It's like the issue about assault rifles.

In the right hands it's perfectly safe. In the wrong hands it's disasterous.

But in our society there's no reasonable argument (IMO) for having something with such a potential for harm.

And that potential is (in both cases) based upon something inherent to the thing. And there are alternatives for each that satisfy real needs.

It seems to be a case of "I need that because I want that".

23. the problem is that so many wrong caretakers think they know what their doing and don't, i have to
Edited on Sun Nov-04-07 02:56 PM by sam sarrha
carry a spray bottle of soapy water, a little ammonia and 'boundary' and a weapon, whenever i walk my dogs. people don't have proper fences, restraints, leashes... i find it very rare for people to be informed and have a trained dog.. but they all spout the same story, so misunderstood

"oh, he wont hurt you". all the while displaying attack behavior signals... i didn't think he would, cause i had already sprayed him once, when he jumped the fence and crossed the street to attack my little dogs.

i spray the road before them as a warning while calling the to get back.. then i spray low then in the face if they continue, they can be very determined and follow a fair distance..

there are fewer here in nc, but i el paso they were every where, i had to drive 3 miles to a park to walk my dogs

16. Good story
IIRC, read an article about how Americans usually end up using poor breeding habits creating unstable dogs.

German Shepherd, Rotties, and another breed that I can't remember kennels had to be re-stocked (??) by Germany after a stern reprimand for mishanding breeds.

17. probably Dobies...
Yes... I've always been struck at how very different, both in looks and behavior true German breeding stock were for these breeds, especially German Shepherds. They are wonderful dogs, but our lax breeding policies (nonexistant regulations) have destroyed much of that over here.

19. Yes, it was Dobies
You know that something is amiss here in the states when the same breeds deemed "dangerous" you can find sitting calmly in a bar or restaurant in Germany.

26. My cousin was malled by her beloved pit bull.
She got 65 stitches on her face alone. And, she still adores this dog.

I, frankly, would like to see them banned. Too many times I have seen people 'walking' their pit bull...not holding onto the leash but, allowing the dog to trail 20 yards behind them with the leash dragging on the ground. It seems, to me, to be a power trip for some dog owners.

From Legacy of the Dog by Kojima:

This powerful dog was modified and bred soley for fighting"
