SURPRISE! Pentagon Says Musharrafs "State Of Emergency" No Big Deal
Pentagon says emergency does not affect US support to Pakistan
Updated at 0400 PST

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon said Gen. Pervez Musharraf's declaration of state of emergency in Pakistan does not affect U.S. military support, a spokesman said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is monitoring the fast-developing situation, Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said.

“Pakistan is a very important ally in the war on terror and he is closely following the developments there,'' Morrell told reporters aboard Gates' plane as he traveled to China.

The emergency declaration “does not impact our military support of Pakistan'' or its efforts in the war on terror, Morrell said of the country, which is a key U.S. partner in the fight against al-Qaida militants.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is taking the administration’s lead in dealing with the situation, Morrell said, and Gates had not spoken to Musharraf and had no plans to during his17-hour flight to Beijing.

1. Finally, there it is for all the world to see...I hope some in the US finally see it.
The US government cares not one whit what a country does to its people so long as US business and military interests are enriched.

The next time someone warns you of the evils of communism or socialism coming to the US or attempts to defend US actions in the name of "democracy" and freeing a people from a dictator, remind them of this US sponsored stance.

6. I really think that this is a well organized test case for the US.... See..
where it leeds and how much resistance that the Bush Bots can expect when they want to get on with it.

9. Did you notice Musharraf used the phrase "activist judges"?
It was in an article posted here yesterday. I'll see if I can find it. He's channeling * and the repub smear machine.

17. He said he was saving democracy by disrupting it
and that he had given the media and the judges independence but they had abused it and that "elements" weremaking it hard to fight terrorism

From another post yesterday (my post)

he said

"...disrupting democracy in order to save it."

"I say with sorrow that some elements are creating hurdles in the way of democracy," ... "working at cross purposes with the executive" and "weakening the government's resolve" to fight terrorism."

Sounds like something Bush would say doesn't it?

18. Or at least bush's writers and handlers. Absolutely amazing.
The authoritarian rulers keep using the same damned hand-book and we (the collective not the specific "we") keep buying it and some of us keep embracing it. *sigh*

I swear I was born on the wrong planet!

:hi:

It does help to take time off. Funny isn't it? DU has helped me to get through the last several years but a break from DU helps too.

Too much of a good thing and all that...

5. BushCo probably gave a wink and a nod to Musharraf to do this
I don't think the little general does much of anything without their consent. This is all a put-up job!

19. Exactly, all Musharaf did was get rid of the fake transparency of a free media
in a military dictatorship...

Now, if only a viable option to the status quo will come out of this. Bhutto and Sharif are not the answer.

MUSHyarraf was just another dictator they deal and suck, for awhile.

Our regime LOVES conflict and perpetual war.

The fall of MUSHyarraf will add fuel to the fire of those who grow power when conflict expands.
