Van emits mysterious smoke that sickens nearby drivers

Just in time for Halloween, the Kansas Highway Patrol has a mystery on its hands.

At least two motorists last week reported becoming ill after driving through an odd cloud of smoke, sometimes described as pinkish, coming from inside a van. Both sought hospital treatment. One said he missed two days from work.

“We have no idea what it (the smoke) was,” said Highway Patrol Lt. Paul Behm. “We don’t know where it (the van) originated from, and we don’t know where it went to.”

Behm said the van was seen Thursday morning, heading south on Interstate 35 between 75th Street and Interstate 635 with a noxious plume billowing from the rear.

There has been speculation that the van contained a methamphetamine lab, but there is no evidence to support that theory, Behm said. He said meth labs usually give off a foul odor but do not smoke unless something inside catches fire.

He added that the makers of the illegal drug do sometimes use vans to transport portable, or rolling, meth labs from place to place but seldom risked explosion by mixing the chemicals while traveling.

“But keep in mind, anything is possible,” Behm said.
