Leopard warning for Photoshop users! Important!
Edited on Wed Oct-31-07 03:51 PM by Atman
I have it on good authority that Leopard does not support Photoshop 7. The CS versions are okay, but a colleague found out the hard way that Leopard actually hosed his Photoshop files. He had to reinstall Tiger, but still lost lots of work. Consider yourself fore-warned. If you're a Photoshop 7 user, don't install Mac's Leopard update to OSX.

1. Well, upgrade Photoshop instead; CS3 puts 7, CS, and CS2 to shame.

And costs only $200.

Welcome to the real world; sometimes new OS versions break older apps. Especially if security enhancements have to be made; this sort of issue goes back LONG before WIndows' prevalence. (Atari, Commore, Amiga, Altair... They all had backward compatibility issues at one time or another.)

Or has Adobe finally done to the Mac version of Photoshop what they did to Mac version of Premiere and drop the Mac product altogether?

3. I have PS CS2...is CS3 really that much better?
Sheesh...there is already so much in CS2 I don't know!

2. all prudent upgraders back up first, and install on a separate partition
but while you're at it, leopard also does not support classic any longer.

time to move forward.

4. If you knew who I found this out from you'd be saddened.
Out of respect for his privacy, I'm not giving out names. I got the message from a private message board for cartoonists. Trust me, you're probably already a fan of his daily comic strip. I'm surprised he didn't back up first. Although, I can't say that I would have, either. I don't have media big enough to back up my main HD. I'd have to buy a new drive, which I really should do anyway. Wake up call, I guess.

5. I"m not dissing him, I'm just saying its prudent to back up first.
further, I doubt his files are truly hosed, I think he just can't run photoshop 7 under leopard. Ask him if he can open them with Preview, the image can opener that comes with the system. If he can, he can then save them back out as another format.

All he really needs to do is copy the files, as is, to a CD or DVD and open them with a non-leopard computer.

if he needs more help:

6. I'm trying to find out now.
You're right...I don't see how the files themselves could be hosed. At the worst, the system could re-label them, but that wouldn't ruin the actual file content. I'll let you know as soon as I hear back.
