Failure becomes the new success

By BILL KAUFMANN

SNIP

It wasn't five years ago former U.S. Gen. Colin Powell delivered what's gone down as the mission accomplished of political three-ring bunkum at the UN.

Powell, whose name has become synonymous with lapdog and patsy, surrendered his mythical honour by reciting a litany of drivel he knew to be dubious at the time.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been slaughtered, 4.5 million made refugees, a gruesome civil war ignited and American-led mercenaries run rampant and unaccountable, much like their military cousins.

What's Colin Powell had to say about this? He's whimpered that his UN performance is a "blot" on his record and it's "painful" for him.

Poor, suffering, globetrotting Powell commands $100,000 a speech, while liberated Iraqis cower in their homes and wonder if they'll enjoy electricity or clean water today.

In Calgary, the Chamber of Commerce hails Powell's performance as a study in international leadership.

Corporate sponsors have jumped on the bandwagon, eager to hitch their light to the disgraced general.

Of Powell and his message to local business, Calgary Chamber president Heather Douglas says: "There's no better leader on earth in leading your team in crisis."

8. Daffy Duck would at least have more credibility
than a war criminal appeasing Uncle Tom ass-kisser to power and a propaganda spinner and bullshitter extraordinaire like Colin Powell.

10. Colin Powell is a failure?
I think we are having another perspective problem -- the kind that leads DUers to declare that Condi Rice is stupid.

A failure is someone who has never had a success -- never operated a successful business, was constantly being picked up and propped up by friends and family, and has never achieved anything in his own merits.

Colin Powell's association with the Bush43 is not a high point on his resume', but he is not a failure. He tried in vain to steer BushCo in the correct direction concerning Iraq, but eventually relented and made the enormous mistake of shoveling manure in front of the UN. We all know, based on everything we've observed, that if Powell would have refused to sell the invasion before the UN, he would have been fired and replaced by someone who would have read the script.

Words mean things, people. Declaring Powell a failure strongly suggests a lack of understanding of the English language or a bias that has poisoned any chance of ever making objective statements.
