Holy hell, Whitey Bulger spotting---maybe.
FBI is in London to boost hunt for Bulger
Hub agents appeal to Scotland Yard
By Shelley Murphy, Globe Staff | October 25, 2007

FBI agents from Boston were in London yesterday, huddling with detectives at Scotland Yard, as part of the worldwide manhunt for fugitive gangster James "Whitey" Bulger.

"It is part of a continuing effort to increase the international awareness of the hunt for Bulger," Thomas Larned, an assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Boston office, said yesterday.

The Bulger task force had launched a media blitz throughout Europe after a couple resembling Bulger, 78, and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, 56, were videotaped by a vacationing federal agent as they strolled through the Sicilian resort of Taormina in April. The FBI posted a portion of the video on its website in September after efforts by American and Italian law enforcement officials to locate and identify the couple were unsuccessful.

"We are continuing efforts to identify the individuals who were seen in Taormina," Larned said.

A crew from Fox TV's "America's Most Wanted," and the show's host, John Walsh, are in London today talking with the FBI and were in Boston two weeks ago, interviewing law enforcement officials, former Bulger associates, and others familiar with the case. A segment on the gangster is slated to run Nov. 17, according to Matt Jablow, one of the show's producers.

Bulger, one of the FBI's 10 Most Wanted, fled just before his January 1995 federal racketeering indictment and was later exposed as a longtime FBI informant and charged with 19 murders. The last confirmed sighting of the gangster was in London's Piccadilly Circus in September 2002, the FBI said.

my close encounter with his brother Billy, he almost ran me over in 1991 on Arch street in Boston--bastard only had his driver stop and come back when someone screamed at them.

5. $5 says he's been dead for years.
The FBI has no vested interest in having their asset Bulger surface alive and talking. See 'The Departed' for a fictionalized glimpse into how twisted the Winter Hill Gang was.

12. I thought the FBI was his asset
In the late 1980s, FBI agents John Newton and Roderick Kennedy failed to document or follow up on a realtor's claim that a gun-toting Bulger threatened to stuff him in a body bag if the realtor didn't pay him $50,000.

In 1988, another FBI agent, supervisor John Morris, who had pocketed $7,000 in payoffs from Bulger, warned Bulger and Flemmi that the FBI had tapped the telephone of a Roxbury bookmaker who worked for them. While indictments resulted from the wiretap, including some Boston policemen for taking payoffs, Bulger and Flemmi went untouched.

Although there is evidence that Connolly protected Bulger and Flemmi, he was not alone. Supervisors and fellow agents often were swayed by his claim there was insufficient evidence to target the pair or that they were too valuable to the FBI.

For example, FBI agent James Blackburn testified he never pursued allegations that Bulger was shaking down a South Boston drug dealer in 1988 after Connolly told him it wasn't true. And agent James J. Lavin III testified that in 1987 he ignored evidence that city workers erected guardrails on private property outside the South Boston liquor store controlled by Bulger after Connolly reminded him that Bulger was an indispensable informant.

<snip>

In a telling aside during recent testimony, one of Connolly's closest associates in the bureau, former agent Nicholas Gianturco, talked about entertaining Bulger and Flemmi at his Peabody home. ``I felt comfortable having them to the house,'' he said. ``It was not an adversarial relationship.''

While Bulger is an ongoing black eye for the G-men, I doubt they'd dispatch one of their own. It's not like they have to worry about "talking", seeing how Elvis has said more in the last 30 years, and Bulger has nobody to rat out but himself and his well-wishers.

13. Tell that to John J. Connolly Jr.,
Who is doing a 10 year stint for this mess of corruption. I'm sure he would rather have had Martorano in a state of permanent silence.
