3. Has there been another escalation in the fighting?
I didn't see anything about it when I read the news today.

24. That, and the Iran saber-rattling too.
The whole world's on edge...

That's why Bush is doing it - he threatens WWIII, threatens to widen the war in the Middle East, and when the price of oil goes up, that's money right into his pocket from his big oil buddies.

9. Those Jawbone guys have closed the spigot a bit. The Saudis are
predicting that they will pump less in the outmonths.

They want something, see? That's how they do it. Instead of squeezing gonads, they turn that spigot.

Time to invade Cuba--there's been a HUGE discovery off the coast!! And hell, most kids take Spanish in school, it'll be a lot easier to just draft all the kids who got a B in Spanish, rather than shipping them halfway round the world and teachin' 'em Farsi!!!

Rah, rah!!! War without END, AMEN!!!

(Do I really need to pull this out? :sarcasm: I probably do, to avoid the inevitable, 'How DARE you!' post...)

25. Wonder how our Jawbone Boy in the White House is gonna handle this?
Can't let those seniors freeze this winter....or maybe he can.

Perhaps he'll ask his fundy pals to pray for a mild winter!

It's either that, or make some accomodation with his pals in thobes!

26. I expect a winter coat drive for those who use heating oil.
Then he'll look for some way to link the raising prices with Iran's desire to pursue nukes.

If all that fails he'll use their deaths as proof that Global Warming is false.

15. Don't forget "Winter Mix." That's in addition to the Saudi output reports mentioned above.
There is a twice-year shortage game they play, with the summer and winter mixes. Insufficient refinery capacity, they whine...they're always a day late and a dollar short in doing the switch-over, too.

11. Dollar is worth less internationally so people want more of them
per barrel.

Weaker the dollar the more expensive our oil is.

12. The situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate
with Turkey being drawn in to northern Iraq. Futures players are betting on much of the region being shut down by war, with shipping through the Persian Gulf becoming a very chancy proposition, something that will put pressure on oil producing nations elsewhere.

In the short term, it is going to be miserable for all of us, as we old crocks who went through the 70s as adults can tell you.

However, in the long term, it will spur research into alternatives to oil, if Stupid doesn't start lobbing nukes and get us all killed.

I'm afraid that's a rather big "if." Somebody blew the whistle on the last "unauthorized" transport of nuclear missiles. Somebody might no do so the next time.

13. Found their excuse: slower-than-expected OPEC production increases
Breaking news banner:

Oil hits record intraday high of $90.10 per barrel on news of slower-than-expected OPEC production increases. More soon.

In other words they're gonna rake it in while they can.

A windfall profit tax on oil companies should go a long way towards balancing things.

21. It's easy, really
Step one: Make threatening noises in the direction of Iran.

Step two: Wait for oil traders to get nervous and drive up the price of oil.

Step three: Watch your buddies in the oil industry make record profits.

Why anti-trust laws don't apply to oil producers is beyond me.

30. Perhaps Hugo Chavez is scaling back again...
Chavez led the charge in a coordinated scale-back in oil production before to drive up prices.

Wouldn't suprise me a bit. Happily, we have the Gulf of Mexico, Canada, and Russia for alternatives.
