so, are people starting to move out of Atlanta?

with just a little over 2 mo. worth of water, (if the estimate stays the same) - and the need to give a 1 mo. notice on many rentals.

are the rentals of U-haul going up?

are the ones who can't move starting to collect and save water?

what are businesses doing. the big ones will get water till the last drop, but what about every other business?

1. I'm not going anywhere.
And I don't know anyone else who is leaving. But people are starting to stock up on water.

4. Some landscapers have already lost their businesses,
and places like garden centers are hurting bad or already closed too.

I'm still hoping that the Fed. judge that the Gov. appealed to will issue an order to the Army Corps of Engineers to stop pumping the millions of gallons out of Lanier everyday. I understand it's being done to protect some mussles in Fl. and Al. If there has to be a tradeoff of where the most serious water needs are, I'd think millions of people and cattle in the State would take priority over the mussles.

6. Jeb made a water deal with Ga., part was for the species saving

but our military has a huge base in N. Fl. and nearby is Disney, etc.

I think that is where the water is going and will contine going, Atlanta be damned.

7. I'm curious if you know if this issue was addressed previously?
I learned of it last week and I cannot help but think that someone should have been working on a different source of water for the mussels back when it first became evident there was potential for a water crisis.

8. It's actually a federal law, and it's an interesting topic.
The whole point of the endangered species act is to protect the species from human activity, period. I agree that it is harsh. But how much water conservation is Atlanta doing -- consistently, over the long term? Places like Australia have faced similar water shortages for years. They let their lawns die (of course), they have low-flow toilets, and they use reclaimed water to drink, as well as imposing some pretty severe restrictions on industry, as well as other innovations. For example:

http://www.waterleech.com.au/ -- a product to allow householders to reclaim gray water to use on their lawns.

As a commentator on NPR said, drought is the least respected national disaster -- people fail to prepare for it through conservation, as well as long-term projects. We learned that here in Texas when we had our long term drought (ended last year) for five years in a row. Despite the fact that the drought has broken, I will be installing rain water capture systems in my yard, for the future. Also, our municipality has started a "low flow" toilet trade in program, and has just secured the water rights to a lake 53 miles away, and is working on a pipeline.

Exceptions can be made in times of crisis.

5. I got out two years ago
Yall can keep the traffic and urban sprawl. I'll be in Savannah where 15 minutes is a standard commute, not the hour and a half in Atl.

17. Atlanta simply has a problem with urban planning. They plan around cars, not people.
It's why you need a car to get everywhere, because everything is sprawled out. You go to a major capital in western Europe, and it's the exact opposite. Cities are built around people, not cars, and they actually want to spend money on mass transit, but that's because a lot of the people there are more communal. Americans are more individualistic and always have been.

10. I'm not from Atlanta but I'm a strong believer in this phrase:
If it's yellow let it mellow if it's brown flush it down.

I think flushing is one of the biggest wastes of time. Mind you, if I'm in public, work or have company then I'll flush everytime. But when it's just me - once a day or if that other condition is met

15. I am IN Atlanta and it really depends on who you talk to
the local resource management people say 77 days in Lanier (at current usage)...of course the Army Corps of Engineers says several months. I really don't care which it is...we need a better long term plan PLUS the Corps needs to adjust its water flow downstream...

14. The Republicans aren't leaving Atlanta...
The Republicans are buying up Ozarka stock. The Republicans have yet to meet a natural disaster they didn't like. And couldn't profit off of.

You can expect "water stands" to pop up all over the place. $10 a bottle.
