If you drop a class or out of school entirely you're paying it all back. ALL OF IT. Plus penalties.
This is the way it should be of course, but the fact is it's not welfare if you have to pay it back.
I will say though when you pay your own way through college you have a way of growing up faster and becoming far more self sufficient than any "adult" who never had to really work a day in their lives. I was a recipient of the welfare form of student loans which as of today I pay back on a monthly basis. All I can say is I'm thankful I didn't enter this form of welfare today as the rates are around 7% in Bush's America when it comes to "Student Aid" or welfare as it is put.
For you parents out there who are more than able to help your kids with college but don't you're assholes. No YOU ARE ASSHOLES and cheap ones at that. It's one thing if your kid is taking advantage of the situation and not attending classes and partying or whatever, but if you have a kid who is motivated and proved him or herself in high school and the only thing stopping that kid from being the one who mentors my 5 year old or helps my mother live another 10 years that's just being selfish and you know it. My parents couldn't afford to pay my way and it makes them upset to this day that they couldn't, which is why to me when I come across other "adults" who just scoff and say well "if my kid wants college he/she should just pay for it on their own. I just feel like smacking them for not taking advantage of the fact that so many other parents including mine would've love to be in their shoes and doing the right thing. Even if you can't afford to pay for tuition but at least let them stay home rent free so long as the grades are up and they do their share of the housework that in itself is a noble effort in my opinion. You're at least doing SOMETHING to make sure your son or daughter obtains something that will help them for life one way or the other - my generation today can't survive without a college degree. Even your basic $12 /hr job is requring a 4 year degree of some kind in today's America.
Again that's an attitude I could understand if they just screwed off in high school and want to use college as an excuse to get ripped on daddy's dime, but to screw your own child out of higher education when they will do the work and the opportunity lies in your hands - nah you're just a cheap piece of shit, all this crap about "character building" again college is one of the roughest jobs a person will ever have especially if they are pursuing a degree which would require a student to effectively set aside about 60-80 hours for their studies which is a reality and the idea that you're helping them by believing they should have a side job over at the Loco Taco in addition to their school responsibilities is ridiculous.
If you are one of those parents who believes this your ass does not belong at their graduation - you did nothing they will have done everything and the pride and sense of achievement should be theirs and theirs only to share with the people who were truly their for them.
