Independence police are on the hot seat (forced a pregnant woman to lie on her stomach!)

Family members of Yvette Hayes and human rights advocates from across the metro area convened outside the City Council's chambers Monday night to question Independence Police Chief Fred Mills about the police department's handling of a then six-month pregnant Hayes during a traffic stop in July.

Independence police came under scrutiny as Mills came out to address the crowd before the council meeting and field questions about racial profiling practices from Hayes' brother-in-law and women and human rights advocates. The questions concerned a July 13 incident in which Hayes was forced to the ground despite her condition as an expectant mother. She was forced to lie on her stomach on the side of an interstate highway.

"Ultimately, we want the City Council to call for the firing of the officers that forced this pregnant woman to lie face down on the pavement," said Hayes' brother-in-law, Marvin Lyman. "We also want them to look at their policies of how they conduct stops of African-American people, other people of color and more importantly, expectant mothers.

"I think the audio and video tape shows exactly what happened," Mills said, "and the sequences that were involved in this situation. The tapes speaks for themselves."

"Chief, what about the complete audio that was not released to the news media?" Lyman injected. "The officers were saying we have to 'cover our ass'."

The video camera on the police car stopped working when they pulled Yvette over. It started working again an hour after they let her go.

I also heard the audio tape. The cops clearly say "We need to cover our ass." Yet the police chief denied they said this.
