Are you happy with the Democratic field or do you think it needs a white knight riding in?

Mr. Gore’s close friends and advisers said Friday that he had no desire to be drawn into the race for the presidency but that he saw the clear advantage of leveraging the acclaim. The clearest expression of his true feelings, they said, was his brief statement of thanks for the prize in an appearance in Palo Alto, Calif., where he talked about planetary politics and uttered not a word about the kind unfolding in Iowa and New Hampshire.

“This obviously turns everybody toward the presidency, but I think he’s saying what he means,” said Paul Begala, a political adviser in the Clinton White House who prepared Mr. Gore for his 2000 presidential debates against George W. Bush. “He knows there’s a Democratic field that Democrats are happy with, and that they don’t need a white knight riding in.”

11. I think it needs someone to shake the front runners up

Whether it be Gore or even one of the other non-front runners, it needs someone to push Clinton, in particular, to a higher, riskier, potentially more rewarding game. I, for one, need to see more vision from the people at the front of the race, less caution, more innovation, less business-as-usual.

These times demand much more than we're being promised from anyone at the front of the race.

12. The problem is that it's a field of good, but not great

Nearly all of the candidates have outstanding, necessary strengths, but all of them also have enough glaring weaknesses that none of them are that close to ideal.

I think nearly all of them could win a general election, but I just don't see anything remotely resembling the potential for greatness emerging from this field.

Does that require a new hero to come charging in? I don't know.

13. I must admit that none of the current batch of contenders really enthuse me.

Each for different reasons. I wish there was someone worth getting excited about.

Some are to middle to right of me others represent me better but are unelectable while others simply have too much baggage.

I'm pining for the early days of the 2004 race when I got worked up for Howard Dean.
