Good for Pelosi!
http://edition.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/10/14/us.turkey/

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that she intends to move ahead with a vote on a resolution that labels the deaths of more than a million Armenians during World War I as genocide........................

:applause:

2. Yeah. Good for her. Whoop-de-do.
It's about time we told the Ottoman empire what we think! Nancy doesn't mess around. I hear she's already writing into her will a provision asking her great grandchildren to consider impeaching Bush.

14. Maybe by the time her great grandchildren are old enough...
we'll have enough votes in Congress to impeach.

But, not now.

So sad, I want it bad, but I can also face the facts.

4. No doubt she'll condemn the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand later in the week
Granted, the Armenian genocide should be called what it is, but I agree that it's not quite the cutting-edge of political relevance.

I should have stipulated that, until last week's vote, it wasn't the cutting-edge of political relevance.

25. I agree with you, though. Maybe soon Nancy will announce
the sad sinking of the Titanic. :)

More seriously, Tom Lantos manages to be wrong even when he's right. That must be really hard to pull off. Things aren't tense enough -- let's piss of the Turks, too.

I was excited when the dems won big in 2006, but I'm over it now. We have gained nothing.

She is fucking clueless!

7. She's doing this to turn Turkey against Bush
Then the Turks will not allow US supplies through Turkish airspace and Turkey will attack the Kurdish region of Iraq, destabilizing it and making Bush look bad.

13. Thank goodness there are other people here who see that this is a stupid
piece of legislation offered at a time when there are so many important things in this counrty that need attention. What the hell does it matter now? Will this bring back anyone? Will this legislation change anything? Will it save any lives? What the fuck? We have things going on right NOW that need attending. Because if we don't, no one may be around to remember the Turks and the Armenians.

And why kick up such a fuss over it now? What with the Turkish Government threatening to go into Kurdish-controlled Iraq to stop the raids over their borders, there's a little problem we can work on right now. And then we can pick another time to piss off what has been a strong NATO ally in the area.

Oh what the fuck, who cares anyway? bush** and cheney taking the country down a path of rags and ruin (except of those they call their 'constituency'), all the death and destruction from wars of major catastrophes, treason in every level of this administration, the threat of a war with Iran that hangs over our heads every damn day, the two wars we got now that will never end if the people in Washington get their way. What the fuck, let's piss off another country, shall we?

15. I hope she knows something no one else seems to know.
Otherwise she is clearly an idiot. If Turkey does attack the Kurds after this vote, the Dems will be blamed for losing Iraq. It doesn't matter that it was probably going to happen anyway and was clearly Bush's fault. It will instantly become the Dems' fault.

23. This concerns me as I think it will seriously harm our efforts to bring our
Iraqi invasion to an end. We NEED Turkey right now, and in addition to that, this will turn yet ANOTHER ally against us.

It accomplishes NOTHING.

We're fucked no matter how the vote goes. I'm furious it got this far.

27. I've changed my mind on this issue. At first I applauded the Dems, however, now that I've found out
this type of action has already been taken several times over the last few decades, it seems like overkill, and just a lousy attempt to embarass Turkey.

28. Turkey
What is the big damn fuss? Why doesn't the Turkish leadership have the decency to say, "Yeah, that was a bad time for our country. We're sorry that it happened." Hmmm? Why?

There are Armenians still living who would like to see this terrible action of their times condemned by America as it has been in other countries.

34. Again
Again, why would the Turks be pissed off? They STILL don't think what happened all those years ago was wrong? Someone should sit down with them and explain that no one is blaming THEM for what happened all that long ago. The action by a leader in Turkey at that time is being condemned, as it should be.

Maybe if Turkey hadn't been our 'close' ally we wouldn't have invaded Iraq.

Cozying up to those in Turkey who think genocide is okay is not the American way. I say the Turks should either apologize (as the US has done with the dirty deed done to Japanese citizens during WWII) or shut up.
It isn't Pelosi who is wrong here. It's the Turks who are defending that genocide oh so long ago.

39. Why continue the Bush legacy of isolating allies? It's ridiculous. Like the Middle East isn't
messed up enough, Pelosi has to pick now as a time to introduce this resolution. Which has already been done in the past. And why Turkey? There's plenty of other countries in the world that have committed atrocities, that have never been apologized for. Is she gonna pass resolutions condemning them as well? And what would be the point? How about instead, working on the things the Democratic Party was elected to accomplish? Gee, what a concept.
