Little more than 24 hours remaining on Clinton/Byrd pledge to repeal the IWR
SENATOR CLINTON: Madam President, I rise to join my colleague and friend, Senator Byrd, to announce our intention to introduce legislation which proposes that October 11, 2007 -- the five year anniversary of the original resolution authorizing the use of force in Iraq -- as the expiration date for that resolution

That was May. What is going on?

The lie that was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was in effect for almost 6 1/2 years, I will be even further enraged if the IWR surpasses the lifetime of that onerous piece of crap.

Tonkin was repealed in January 1971 and the war lasted another two years. We had more troops in theater at the close of 1971 than are currently in Iraq.

The Congress needs to officially vote on the wrongness of the IWR by repealing it now!

2. A general question in my quest to become educated in politics: What is a
"pledge"? Is it something that is voted on?

When something IS voted on, then what's the next step? In this instance I'm thinking of the Biden-Brownback-Boxer amendment which passed, and then... and then.... and then....

Where/when does the action take place to implement something that has "passed"?

I find it really confusing (obviously). They're voting on things all the time, and then I don't hear of the issue after that.

Thank you.

Your apt pupil,
gateley

5. A "pledge" is something you toss out at cocktail parties and presidential debates
to be able to say, "I tried" while in actuality doing nothing at all.

It is about as effective as a "sternly worded letter".

4. Promises and pledges on Capitol Hill mean nothing.
The only thing that means something is your actions. People can talk the talk, but walking the walk is what counts for people in real life.

7. Hot damn Hillary and Byrd get your baseball bat and knock those
republican senators into submission, since they won't allow it to come to vote. Single handedly -- all by their lonesome -- their are going to pass that bill. Damn send the other senators home, bush too, and those two will make the senator soar.

8. Even the act of submitting such a piece of legislation would have symbolic value
but my quick search of Thomas notes zero legislation even submitted. Not true on on the House side.

Biden or Obama fans could remind their candidates that this could be an issue to score potential points with, since Clinton has done nothing.

11. What? Clinton did nothing?.....you don't SAY!.....but she SAID.....!!!!!
Makes you wonder what she will DO about health care, or a host of other things she SAYS she supports.

I really try to give Hillary the benefit of doubt sometimes....but it is such a hard task and I just don't have the endurance.
