And the funny part will be that the site will be, oh, say, 5 to 1 for Gore, but the battles will LOOK like it's 50-50.

Just the way this site works...

I think that Gore is more of a centrist than people realize right now.

10. He was fairly conservative in the past.
He was anti-abortion and kind of hawkish. I think some of that was part of being a Democrat from a southern state. A person's views tend to change over the years, and I really think that Gore has gotten a lot more liberal.

11. It's easier to be liberal when you aren't in power
What has he said about the performance of the Democratic Congress? Near as I can recall he's been moderately positive.

19. That's true.
He hasn't really stuck his neck out. It would be fine if he got in the race, but I don't think it's necessary like a lot of others around here seem to think. We have some great candidates. I think it's bad strategy to sit around and wait for Gore to get in when you could be out campaigning for a perfectly good candidate who is already in the race.

15. Well, let's clarify the record here
As a young congressman early in his political career, Al Gore voted against being pro-choice. He did so despite his personal beliefs, and that of his wife, Tipper, because he felt obligated to vote the preference of the conservative southern state he represented, Tennessee.

He changed to vote his conscience a few years later, particularly as a Senator, having publicly vocalized the fact he could no longer vote the preference of the state and ignore his conscience. He said abortion should be rare, legal and safe, but the final decision should rest with the woman, and if applicable, her husband, hopefully with the advice of the doctor.

There has never truly been a "flip-flop" over the issue, but there has been a clarification made by Gore himself.

He was generally regarded as being very strong on the national defense, and at times was termed a "hawk" by Democratic standards, particularly when he came out as being one of the few Democrats who voted to support the first Gulf war. Believe me, there were not very many, and Al Gore requested time from the media to explain his vote.

So that's his history on those two issues.

23. If you want to clarify it some more,
heres an article where Gore Vidal talks a little bit about his "Cousin Albert." http://www.gnn.tv/articles/2301/Some_Inconvenient_Truths_About_Al_Gore I'm not for holding a guy's past against him forever, and Al Gore has done a lot of good, but he's had a lot of growing up to do.

5. I will stand with Al.
I will support the Democratic nominee, but Al Gore has always been my candidate, and those who want to flame away are welcome to do so. It won't matter.

I will stand with Al Gore.

8. Like I said, it will be 5 to 1 for Al here. BUT the Media will work for Hillary...
And Hillary supporters here will work 24x7 to make this site look like it's evenly divided.

Add to all this the people who COUNT the votes will be firmly in Hillary's camp.

All-in-all messy...extremely messy.

20. I'm not interested in hating anyone else. It has nothing to do with them.
I am SICK and TIRED of this kind of crap, and so are a lot of other posters here at DU. Anti-Hillary or pro-Hillary, there is more at stake here. My support of Al Gore has NOTHING to do with Hillary or anyone else.

Again, I will stand with Al.

the Dems have a great lineup. Women, blacks, former VPs, Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Hispanics.

The more the better. We are not just the party of old white men.

13. Have you noticed that a lot of ardent Gore supporters have
been very quiet recently? That will change should Gore jump in.

The adversity between Al Gore and Hillary Clinton, while recently having surfaced here at this site, is not a new story. They have been at each other's throats for years, and it's been an open secret.

David Mariness reported this years ago, and I posted it here.

If Al Gore does jumps in, one of the persuasive factors will be HE DOES NOT WANT HILLARY AT THE HELM.

There is not a person on this site that can adequately defend Hillary's record against that of Al Gore. Believe me.

On the other hand, if Al Gore does not jump in, the apathy among many anti-war Democrats that we have seen in the 2008 race thus far will not circle the "inevitable" Hillary's wagon, as the MSM is currently suggesting. And the consequences of that, I believe, are utterly unpredictable at this point.

17. Samantha, once again you have hit the nail dead on the head.
"There is not a person on this site that can adequately defend Hillary's record against that of Al Gore. Believe me." You got that right, and besides, I'm not much in the mood for circling any wagons myself.

24. Good point, indeed.
And as far as being quiet on the Gore front, I don't really see that, but for me, I am so pro-Gore, that I will be very disappointed if he doesn't jump in after the Nobel Prize. I really don't want in the end to have to "settle" for HRC. It's like going to the movies and finding that the popcorn machine is on the fritz, so you have to make a second choice of something you really didn't want in the first place.

27. I would rather he didn't run but if he placed himself on the ballet he would get my vote
I would rather he continue doing the work he is doing now. I believe it is more important than being the president.

But if he decided to enter the race then that would indicate that he would rather focus on American Politics. So amongst the candidates in the running I would have to back whomever I support the most and that would be Al.

But I do hope he continues doing what he is doing and doesn't run. Its far more important.

28. Lets hope we have a chance to fight that battle....
I'd wager the ration on DU would be more like 7 or 8 to 1 in Al's favor.

Though I'd happily get battered and bruised for an Al candidacy!!!
