'Draft Gore' Movement Makes '08 Pitch Updated at 1:25 PM

Source: ABC News

ABC News' Nitya Venkataraman Reports: Grassroots organization DraftGore.com pleaded with former Vice President Al Gore to enter the 2008 presidential fray via an "open letter" in the New York Times.

Written on behalf of volunteers and petitioners behind the DraftGore movement and addressed to Gore, the full-page ad in the Times' A-section says:

"You say you have fallen out of love with politics, and you have every reason to feel that way. But we know you have not fallen out of love with your country. And your country needs you now -- as do your party and the planet you are fighting so hard to save."

...

DraftGore.com Treasurer Eva Ritchey told ABC News the ad cost them nearly $65,000 and ran on stand-by, meaning the ad's run date could not be guaranteed. Though the ad has been part of the group's larger strategy since late spring, DraftGore.com founder Monica Friedlander says the money for the ad was raised in six days following an appeal about ten days ago to their 136,000-member signature base. Friedlander says most contributions came in small donations in the $20-$50 range.

Ritchey says the "ad belongs to the petitioners."

Al Gore's Fans Make 2008 Draft Pitch

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: October 10, 2007

Filed at 11:34 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Draftgore.com, which describes itself as a group of grass-roots Democrats, underwrote a full-page open letter to Al Gore in Wednesday's New York Times, imploring the former vice president to enter the presidential campaign.

The ad, which says 136,000 people have signed Draftgore's online petition, was published two days before this year's Nobel Peace Prize is expected to be announced. Gore has been nominated for the prize because of his campaign to bring attention to global warming.

''America and the Earth need a hero right now -- someone who will transcend politics as usual and bring real hope to our country and to the world,'' Draftgore's letter said.

Monica Friedlander, founder and chair of Draftgore.com, said the timing of the $65,000 ad was a coincidence and not related to the prize.

''All we're trying to do is persuade him that it's a moral imperative for him to be a candidate,'' said Friedlander, 47, a public relations specialist in Oakland, Calif. She said the group raised the money for the ad with an e-mail solicitation sent out last week, receiving more than 2,000 donations.

He loves the people and this country to ignore the Calling.

Thanks for the link!

2. Give it up already!
If he wanted to run he should have been in the race back in the spring. This "draft Gore" stuff is bull IMO. I want a candidate who wants to be president enough to fight for it! And no, I'm not against Gore, he would have had my vote if he had thrown his hat into the ring earlier.

......the New York Times quoted Gore as saying, "Having spent 30 years as part of the political dialogue, I don't know why a 600-day campaign is taken as a given, and why people who aren't in it 600 days out for the convenience of whatever brokers want to close the door and narrow the field and say, 'This is it, now let's place your bets.' If they want to do that, fine. I don't have to play that game.

this is nonsensical. I don't want a candidate who needs to be dragged kicking and screaming into the race. I want a candidate who WANTS to run and WANTS to win.

I merely pointed out that yes, people did think he was late. Also, everybody knew he was going to announce. He still campaigned unofficially and he still prepped donors.

As of today, it's a non-issue.

If Gore declares, the lateness issue will recede to insignificance, as it has with Thompson.

16. Gore polls at 12%+ and he hasn't even declared
Not one of the other candidates would show up in the polls if they hadn't declared.

What this truly shows is that the people want Gore so much that they will even vote for him in a Poll
when he isn't an announced candidate.

Gore is a political phenomenon.

When he announces, their will be nothing for the others candidates to do but fight over the Vice-Presidency. Good luck with that sHillary...

20. Umm no, get your facts correct before posting please
Candidates who haven't announced yet are OFTEN included in the polls. For instance, in 2003, Hillary beat Dean by a 3 to 1 margin when included in the polls. Fred Thompson was included in many Republican polls. As I also pointed out, when Gore is included as an option on the poll, he rates at about 12%.

30. All of the contenders
in the Senate voted for it. It was shameful. There is no rational explanation for it but political ambition. Why should I love such a disgrace?

Gore supported the first Gulf War and opposed the second one. Should I apologize because my candidate was principled and courageous and yours wasn't?

I choose a candidate based on the issues. If she had done the principled thing (as did Gore and Obama) I would certainly give her credit. But she dissembles to this day on Iraq.

She is responsible for her immoral vote, not me.

42. In 2002, when that vote was cast,
I had no idea whether Gore would run in 2004. I wanted Gore, but ultimately backed Dean.

Did you march against the Iraq war? I did. I hate war. In the last century, the percentage of civilian casualties has been steadily on the rise.

Your attempt to impute to me some weird glee that "leaders" of our party would vote for an immoral war is a classic ad hominem attack. In other words you got nothin'. And neither does your avatar. I would recommend a class on how modern warfare affects civilian populations.

One syllable.

Four consonants and one vowel.

Starts with a 'T' and ends with an 'L'.

Rhymes with 'bowl'...
