Pelosi defends refusal to put "God" on flag certificates
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today defended the Architect of the Capitol's refusal to permit use of the word "God" on official certificates enclosed with flags flown over the U.S. Capitol...

Asked about the issue today at a press luncheon, Pelosi said the architect's policy was adopted because "people were asking for statements that not only were religious, beyond using the word God, but political as well." She said the official policy is to send a certificate that lists nothing beyond the date the flag flew over the Capitol and the name of its recipient. She said that members of Congress who request flags on behalf of constituents can "add whatever they wish" to the certificates, "whether it is a political statement or a religious statement."

"It's not about being anti-religion," Pelosi said, noting that each day in the Capitol starts with a prayer. "It is just about what the architect thought was appropriate for him to proclaim in a certificate."...

1. How brave of her
to finally put SOMETHING on the table.

Jeebus

Nice thing to finally take some sort of a stand on Nancy.

3. Did you hear her
take that tough stance on torture this Sunday? Keep defending her...Read, out loud, the last answer she gives--- and then tell me how much sense that makes.

Pelosi, being interviewed by Chris Wallace, said she really can't decide what torture really is....
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,300097,00.html

WALLACE: It's been disclosed this week that the Justice Department, after publicly declaring torture abhorrent in 2004, secretly, a few months later, approved the — in combination — the use of head slapping, water boarding and exposure to extreme temperatures.

The president now says that the leadership, the Congress, was fully informed, and that this is not torture.

First question: Were you ever briefed about this policy or the secret Justice Department memos?

PELOSI: Well, in order to know if I'm briefed about it, I'd have to be briefed about it now. What exactly is the president talking about? Yes, let me get my credentials right out there. I'm the longest-serving member of Congress on the intelligence committee, both on the committee and ex officio as a leader. So we have been briefed on some tactics used by the administration.

But I'd have to see what we're talking about here, because this is — all I know is what I've read in the New York Times.

WALLACE: You were never briefed about these secret memos in 2005?

PELOSI: No, not about the secret memos.

But let me say also, again, as one who appreciates the value of intelligence to protect the American people, I think it's very important that we have the best possible intelligence. And there's international cooperation on this, and there are international standards on it. And I think that protecting the American people being our top priority, we should do so in a way that is within the law, and experts agree that you do not obtain reliable intelligence through using these tactics.

WALLACE: So let me ask you directly...

PELOSI: ... and you diminish our reputation in the world, which hurts the cooperation we need to collect the intelligence we need to protect the American people.

WALLACE: So let me ask you directly. Do you think that the interrogation techniques that have been reported — let's not talk about what's in the memo, but what's been reported — in combination, head slapping, water boarding, exposure to extreme temperatures. Torture?

PELOSI: There is a legal definition of torture that I believe this would fit. The president says it is not. Again, we have to see the degree and what he is talking about, because again, to answer on the basis of something that's been reported in the press that the president has deemed is not torture, it's just not — I just can't give you an informative answer on that.

5. She's being cautious, but she says
that she believes what was done fits the legal definition of torture. I wish it was stronger, but for all I know she has defensible reasons for speaking in that manner.

btw, hate your photo and sig line: what's that about?

12. My sig line?
I like it ....

I read what nancy said about torture and then I sent it to Stacy Taylor 1360 KLSD and he read it on the air yesterday and no one could make sense out of it.

She has no defense for not saying that waterboarding is torture. it is a ridiculous statement...

But besides that....

I am an Avid fan of the Silence of the lambs trilogy - (I don't count his 4th and most recent book, Hannibal Rising- I thought it was beneath Harris's other work) ----besides that, Thomas Harris is a masterful story teller.

The image and line are from Silence of the lambs. The Character is Jame Gumb, the dog's name is Precious. I use it because I am not always thinking about politics.

Also, I am famous for changing the image and sig line...

8. Don't we have more to worry about than this?
Typical... to get sidetracked from the real issues.

Great.just great.

God on a frikkin' flag certificate while people are dying and bush gets away with just about EVERYTHING.

And this makes you all happy? No wonder we are in the mess we are on. Open your eyes folks.

All this is nothing but a big distraction.

10. Zandor, does this cause a division within yourself? You seem to post many threads
singing the praises of Pelosi and you also post many threads asking us DUers to pray for certain individuals and situations. (and sometimes you change your avatar to the American flag)

What do you think of Pelosi's action on this?
