Steps needed to close down a society
by Naomi Wolf (and me) The first ten are hers... the last two are mine

Here they are:

1.- Invoke and internal and external enemy... check

For those who don't know, internal liberals (they tried with arabs)
External, islamo fascims

2.- Create a Gulag, a prison system outside the law

Guantamo and the dark prison sites

3.- Develop a thug caste

Many of the followers are part of this caste, and are the bullies that we face all the time.

4.- Set up an internal surveillance system

Need I say more?

5.- Harrass citizens groups

The Moore F 911 movie had examples, but it is happening

6.- Random detentions

What happened at the Phoenix airport the other day might be one of them, and TSA is doing it regularly

7.- Target key individuals

Dan Rather...

Donahue, and those are just the begining of this

8.- Control the press,

I don't think I have to go there... we see it all the time

9.- Disent equals treason

The language is here... been used in speeches

10.- Suspend the rule of law

We are well on our way.

Now I will add to this one or two of my own

11.- Create an internal army loyal to you, and not the state

Blackwater

12.- Close travel and communications forcing annomie

Passpots and border controls.

By the way for her points and far more expanded here is an invaluable link

3. Am about a third of the way through so far....
You?

The "echoes" she exemplifies are spot on.

We really do only have a small window of time to save nation and its foundations of democracy.

9. That's part of the problem
they are playing the almost predictable role of a cowed down legislature

We are the government, until they slash down... but that is the truth

6. please read October Harper's Magazine
An essay there calls for a general strike. It's very convincing.

I just started a thread over in Editorials, with some excerpts.

8. I got Harpers and I read it
when it got home

I turned to my husband and said... damn we just crossed a bridge here

Of course that was the same week I heard the word revolution over the Big Eddie air.

So we have crossed some kind of a threshold, but I don't know if we have time

We meed to act, and fast

10. it means giving up normalcy
Once down that road, thing will not be the same. That's precisely what the writer is telling us when he says:

"A young man goes to Walter Reed without a face. Shall I make an appointment with my barber? A female prisoner is sodomized at Abu Graib. Shall I send a check to the Clinton campaign?"

13. Don't Forget Fema Concentration Camps
Someone please tell me I'm way off base here. But from what I've gathered, from sources that aren't that reliable, FEMA right now has concentration camps set up around the country and staffed by private security firms ready for business. And the really scary part is, that their directive of when they'll be used, "in case of civil unrest or pandemic" is the same wording used to describe when Blackwater might be used domestically.

It's a hoax right?

23. From What I heard
The Fema Camps are somewhat documented and established. I've done some research on them and from what I've found they are for real. Now, on the other hand, my rational brain can't believe it.

I was hoping for some enlightenment on this issue. But in the end, looks like I'm gonna just have to burn a day and a tank of gas or two and drive out to one of these so-called camps to satisfy my curiosity.

24. The camps have been circulating since the 1980s
that is why they are somewhat legendary... and they rise and wane with the times

26. How's that?
Circulating? DO you mean they close and re-open in another location? Or is it rumors of the camps that have been circulating?

I'd really like to know more. I mean, the whole concept might be the scariest thing we've seen from our government in a good long time. Course on the other hand, it may just as well be a pork program designed to funnel more money in the hands of Halliburton and their ilk.

14. K&R I'm reading Wolf's "End of America" now.
Regarding your No. 11, I agree, and I'm also concerned that our regular armed forces are in great numbers loyal to Bush first, and his wacko evangelical delusions. Right up the road from me in Colorado Springs, there are many reports of pressure on the military to cotton to "Christian" infiltration. That, in combination with Blackwater, is a nightmare of enormous proportions.

Regarding No. 12, I have long had musings (that I laughed at myself over, at first) about having to stop at a manned checkpoint to travel from New Mexico to Arizona. Could be coming to a state near us all, very soon.

I read "Defying Hitler" about three years ago, and the author talked about the "frog in a pot" syndrome (though he didn't call it that) where everything seems normal for a long time, with just a few little freedoms disappearing here and there, but people insist on remaining positive, and assume all that will be rolled back in that glorious future when the current emergency has passed.

No. 5: The MoveOn.org censure resolution.

No. 9: Recent legislation (can't remember which now; it's late) allows seizure of all assets if/when Bushco declares any of us as supporters of terrorist groups. And what's a terrorist group? Any group that opposes Bushco. It's all a neat little package.

Another point comes to mind: Set citizens against each other, and encourage them to "rat" on their neighbors. That is perhaps inherent in No. 1 and others.

We're in trouble, and I'm sleeping very poorly. With that in mind, I'll check out your link. Thanks for more sleepless nights, I suspect.

Valuable post.

17. please elaborate on #6
What happened at Sky Harbor was not "random." A disturbed individual threw a tantrum in a secure area and was arrested. Given another disturbed individual and another secure-area tantrum, the same arrest would happen again. Decidedly un-random.

Is there any real evidence of TSA randomly detaining people?

25. I have seen it reported several times. once on 60 minutes; they interviewed 40 people who
were on the no-fly list for no reason, and could not get off. Also, larisa, the journalist, chronicled her cousin's arrest and detainment without access to a lawyer, without any charges. Because Larisa organized, and people were all ov er the case, the woman was eventually freed, but it took months.

19. In that list, Naomi was including Blackwater in the thug caste.
In her book, The End of America, Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot, she includes them in Chapter 4, Develop a Paramilitary Force.
