TROY -- About 170 residents attended a rally opposing the new Hooters restaurant location, including four City Council members, two of whom addressed the crowd this week.
The Troy Concerned Citizens Group was formed to oppose a liquor license transfer to the Hooters location at the corner of Rochester and Big Beaver roads. The group on Monday staged a rally at the Elks Club on Big Beaver.
"Turnout-wise, we had anticipated 200, and by rounding off the best we can figure is 170," said group spokesman Herb Everss. "Council members Christina Broomfield and Wade Fleming spoke, and two members were in the audience, Robin Beltramini and Martin Howrylak. So that was a good sign of interest from the City Council and city officials of what this group is all about, and more importantly, what they're all interested in is what kind impact can they have or what impact will they have."
Everss said the group's objective was to "bring visibility of what we as citizens of Troy feel that intersection of Troy could be developed into as an extension of the corridor study."

Because image is the key hindering the present business from transferring its liquor license, Everss said, "If there was interest for someone to open a root beer business on that corner, we probably would be against it because we would not feel it would be the kind of image that could be created from the private sector to develop that entire area as a gateway to Troy at its busiest intersection."
