OMG! My freeper coworker is in rare form today.
He's wearing his flag shirt and is spouting nasty stuff. I guess the attacks on Limbaugh have pushed him over the edge. He sold some silver this morning, so he's been on cloud nine about that. He has declared he loves global warming because it's keeping us from being buried ass-deep in ice. He said global warming is a lie - he's researched it and we're just between 2 ice age periods - it's all cyclical, and National Geographic knows it. He's also declared the economy is grand and there is no housing bust - it's typical market fluxuation. I'm sure after his coffee, he'll start in about the *co veto.

I saw a sweatshirt the other day that says "Caution - Explosive political opinions contained inside" I'm thinking of buying it for him and leaving it on his desk anonymously - just to see if he'll wear it.

1. And your bosses...
Allow this? I mean, there are a lot of places where they would tell someone like this, regardless of political persuasion, to take a pill or something.

2. Flag Desecration
If he's wearing a shirt that is made from or looks to be made from a U.S. Flag, he is in violation of the Flag Code. Print the manual out and leave *that* on his desk!

Point and laugh, point and laugh. Maybe he'll STFU...!

If that doesn't work, tell the boss all of his Limbaugh-repeating is interfering with your ability to be productive.

7. I hate to bust the bubble about him liking the warming.
He certainly does not know anything about global warming. Because this is going to effect the oceans of the world, the Gulf Stream is going to be diverted. It is going to play havoc with the winds etc . Pretty soon there will be an Ice Age. It will cover the world with inches of ice. AND it probably won't get better it will get worst. These people who rant and rave about no global warming don't know what is really going on. They are stupid and ignorant and couldn't understand if they read it.

He'd be an asshole anywhere, regardless of topic or any (probably impossible) future change in his political opinions. It's in his goddamned DNA, that much is certain. x(

I wouldn't spend a dime on him, not even for a joke. Your fortitude in not exploding yourself goes Above and Beyond the call, for sure. :applause:

9. He's getting really defensive because he knows he's wrong
I'm afraid we're all going to see a lot of blowhards like that from now on.

Best thing to do is just let them rant and rave and laugh at them behind their backs.

It's not easy being cock of the walk one day and seeing it all fall apart and everything you base your self worth on turn out to be wrong. Some of these guys are going to go postal.

If he starts to interfere with your work, complain to HR. Otherwise just sigh and avoid him.

13. I certainly hope he doesn't. He's got tuns of guns and
here I sit on the opposite side of his cubby. The big boss is not much help because he even comes by and instigates it. Hubby is one of the next levels down and someone went to him the other day because of all the gun talk this guy does. He talks with his quad mates about the damage certain ammo would do to people. We're in an academic environment, so everyone is very protective of free speech around here. I did tell hubby that if I hear this guy say he's brought his gun to work or is showing his gun off in the parking lot, I'm calling the public safety office AND our local police.

28. "laugh at them behind their backs"? I prefer to laugh at them to their faces.
Then blame everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) on Clinton.

Global warming (that isn't happening, but he loves anyway)? Clinton's fault
Aids? Clinton's (that immoral philandering pervert) fault
Traffic jam? That was Clinton too.
Paper jam? You guessed it.

11. Two points about the effects of media and how ones perception of reality can be formed.
First off, I hope you realize that there is no way in the name of hell your friend came to all of these conclusions himself and his empirical "research" of the raw data.

These ideas CAME from somewhere. If he didn't have the radio, fox, his right wing blogs, etc., he'd be just a regular guy probably talking about sports.

This is an important point, because I honestly believe your coworker isn't evil, but that he's being manipulated by forces which have woven a full featured, detail rich, comprehensive view of the world in order to further their agenda, which, in my experience, means making rich people more rich.

Anyway, the second point dovetails with the first one. Your friend isn't stupid. The men who believed that the Sun revolved around the Earth weren't stupid. It was something they were told since they were little boys, and that explanation worked for practically everything they saw and did. There was no reason to think otherwise. If you were an expert, however, an astronomer, you'd still have those little retrograde movements of the planets. That's the stuff of eggheads. Who cares?

But, the vast majority of people were WRONG. They weren't stupid, they just had a vision of the Sun and the Earth that explained everything they saw and worked, but was WRONG. If you started talking about retrograde movements of planets, they'd go glassy eyed and lose interest. (like taxes) Who cares about such little things?

Now, if you listen to talk radio, watch Fox and CNBC, read the Wall Street Journal and read right wing blogs, all of this will make sense. Little details from "questionable" sources won't change this person's mind. His mind will take whatever comes his way and put it in a nice little place in this fantasy universe where it fits perfectly.

If he's making it hard for you to do your job, report him. Otherwise, I would suggest, you may take him as an opportunity to learn about many more like him.

15. I love the part about printing out the laws for Flag use and leaving it for him.
I'll have to print it at home. He's a DBA and can see printer queues around here. He really isn't a *bad* guy, Or at least he wasn't. I'm thinking he's more psycho than bad. Something happened or was said to him before the 2004 election that made him alot worse. I've known him for about 15 years. Sheesh! He was almost crying in our kitchen at work telling me that I had to vote for *co, otherwise his step-son was gonna get drafted. I've been trying to set him straight from that point on, and have recently just given up. It's not worth making my BP go up.

Thanks for letting me vent. I just couldn't believe some of the crap he was saying.

16. Politics -- especially during this time of deep division -- should be avoided at the workplace.
Someone who wears a flag shirt to work and presents himself as a Faux News bullhorn is simply asking for trouble.

One rotten apple can spoil the whole bunch: hasn't your boss ever heard that? A positive atmosphere at the workplace can be very productive for business.

21. LEAVE THIS BOOK ON HIS DESK...Confessions of a former dittohead"
http://www.igpub.com/confessions.html

Everyone knows a dittohead. In addition to being devoted listeners of Rush Limbaugh, they’re also loud, judgmental, and sure they’re always right. One of the most common phrases you’ll hear them use is “if you only understood politics you’d be a Republican.” And from abortion to gay marriage to national defense to fiscal policy, Rush tells them how it only works the Republican way.

Confessions of a Former Dittohead details how over a thirteen-year period and a “thousand small cuts,” Jim Derych moved away from Rush Limbaugh and the Republican Party and embraced the Democratic Party and Liberalism. Sharing both the personal—a friend who had an abortion as a teenager, a gay college roommate who delayed his coming out because of “people like Jim”—and the political—a comical encounter with the Young Republicans, his reaction to the torture scandals and the Iraq War—this is a moving and thought-provoking account that dispels the myth of “compassionate conservatism.”

Tthe book provides a fascinating “insider” account on how dittoheads think on the major political, economic and social issues of the day. As the country remains politically polarized, Confessions of a Former Dittohead provides a rare glimpse into the Republican mind, revealing how conservatives think, and what liberals and progressives can do to change that thinking.

Not "explosive" political opinions, "toxic" political opinions. He's poisoning himself from within, and will keel over from a heart attack or contract killer cancer by the time he's 60. At which time he'll whine for some of that socialized medicine because he won't be able to afford the treatment or prescriptions that will keep him alive.
