I was listening to Stephen Kings The Gunslinger on my iPod while at work yesterday and today, and this quote struck me as being particularly relevent.
The actual quote from the book as the gunslinger-in-training Roland ponders the sympathy of the crowd during the hanging of the traitor Hax is this:
When traitors are called heroes (or heroes traitors, he supposed in his frowning way), dark times must have fallen.
I think that it can be nicely reduced to When traitors are called heroes, or heroes are called traitors, dark times must have fallen.
The Republicans are doing most or all all of the calling in this case. The Swift-boating of Kerry and Clealand, the dirty push-polling of McCain, the elevations of Bush43 and Reagan to sainthood, the various and sundry awards and accolades showered upon people like Rumsfeld, Libby, and Tenent...
Feel free to list other incidents that I'm not recalling off the top of my head. Lord knows I can't keep them straight without some sort of large, multicolored chart!
But the fact that the Republicans conduct business this way... what does that say about their values and objectives? To me, it means that those values and objective are dark and to some degree evil or at best indifferent. And this saying I think sums that up nicely.
Just wanted to share this.
