School bans confederate flags after disturbance

Sep 28, 2007 — Confederate flags, shirts and symbols are now banned at Susquehannock High School following a disturbance in the parking lot Thursday.

Several students who were upset that someone took down their Confederate flags from the backs of their pickup trucks created a scene by speeding through the parking lot, running stop signs and yelling, said Southern Schools Supt. Thomas Hensley.

The students had complained to Principal Brian Cashman that someone stuffed the flags into a tailpipe, he said.

After fielding the complaint, the students - who had been wearing Confederate flag shirts to school - were told by Cashman the symbol was then banned because it had become disruptive, Hensley said.

The students defied Cashman's instructions to remove all Confederate symbols from the school campus by returning to the parking lot after school where they made a commotion, including driving recklessly through the parking lot waving the Confederate flag, Hensley said.

“We are very concerned about freedom of speech and student rights. But the students cannot engage in conduct that is disruptive to our learning environment or creates an environment where our students feel harassed or threatened,” Hensley said.
