1. in fact,
can anyone tell me what happens when you have to get your passport reissued (because mine runs out in March of 08), but, while waiting for it, you still have international business to attend to? are you given some kind of form or something you can show to Customs indicating that you've reapplied and are waiting for the new passport? stupid question, perhaps, but I've hesitated getting the new passport because I seem to be traveling overseas two or three times a month!

5. I would look on the state department website, then call your local passport office.
You can get one in person. That way you won't have to give up your old one till you get your new one. Theoretically, it is only supposed to take 6 weeks now, but in person may be faster.

9. That was the case for my mom recently.
She had to travel to Canada, but she was waiting for her passport to be renewed. She brought documentation showing that she had made the request and some other ID. There were no problems. Of course, that may just be Canada.

Visitors to Canada
Arriving in Canada

Our border services officers are at the ports of entry to ensure that people entering Canada respect Canadian laws. They are authorized to examine people and goods entering Canada to determine their admissibility. Their goal is to facilitate the entry of legitimate travellers and goods as quickly as possible.

When you enter Canada, a border services officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, when necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada; however, you should carry proof of your citizenship such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization or a Certificate of Indian Status, as well as a photo ID. If you are a permanent resident of the United States, you must bring your permanent resident card (i.e. green card) with you. For more information on admissibility into Canada, read the fact sheet called Managing Access to Canada. It is available on our Web site at www.cbsa.gc.ca.

Now, about coming home...
AIR TRAVEL

Implemented on January 23, 2007, ALL PERSONS traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean region are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL

The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

* JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.
* SUMMER 2008
At a later date to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.

The implementation date will be determined based on a number of factors, including the progress of actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security to implement the WHTI requirements and the availability of WHTI compliant documents on both sides of the border. DHS and DOS expect the date of full WHTI implementation to be in the summer of 2008. The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice.

Note: The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory.

U.S. PASSPORT AND OTHER TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

* U.S. Passport: U.S. citizens may present a valid U.S. passport when traveling via air, land or sea between the U.S. and the aforementioned Western Hemisphere countries.
* The Passport Card: This limited-use, wallet-size passport card is not yet available and is under development. When available it will only be valid for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean region (includes Bermuda).
* Other Accepted Travel Documents: SENTRI, NEXUS, FAST and the U.S. Coast Guard Mariner Document. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty traveling on orders are exempt from the passport requirement. DHS has more information on these travel documents.

11. You need photo id and proof of citizenship
that's nicely combined in a passport but apparently you could also use a license and birth certificate.

12. Do you need a passport to enter Canada?
Do US Citizens Need a Visa or Passport to Enter Canada?
No. US citizens do not need a visa to enter Canada, and for now, travelers to Canada from the US do not need an American passport when crossing the border.

However, if you are an American citizen, be sure to have the proper identification to enter Canada.

It looks like the State Dept. hasn't set a firm date for needing a passport.

15. As of August they accepted an ID like a birth certificate.
I entered with a passport, but my naturalized Canadian friend used her citizenship papers because she didn't have a passport and her birth certificate said she was born in Canada. LOL They accepted the alternate ID though.
