2. no one has to donate at all-- it's a service many of us provide...
...to keep this community growing. There is no way that google ads can pay more than a fraction of the cost of running DU.

3. If you are a donor you can turn off the adds but it cuts down on the pay DU gets for them
I leave them on for that reason even if I have to see a link to Ann the Man Coulters site every once in awhile

6. use Firefox and AdBlock-- that way the ads get served to your computer...
...but turned off at your browser. DU serves them, and presumably gets paid for serving them, but you don't have to look at them.

10. Actually, they don't...not for the Google ads, at least.
Google Ads are paid per click.

Surprised me! I did not think anyone cared for me here. Probably will be the only one I get for the 14th. Thanks to whoever it was.

15. I agree!!!!!
Dear Skinner,

Why can't you just let us design our own individual forums and host them ourselves if we don't like yours, instead of forcing us to come to your stupid website for free and setting up an optional way for us to donate?!!!

Fuming with rage at the injustice of it all,

LWF

18. How would you expect them to keep it running?
I mean, #1 - you don't HAVE to donate. I'm always glad to, because there is so much on here that I find no where else. I could never repay what I have gained from this website, but I don't HAVE to donate.

#2 The "donation web page" you speak of is temporary, as you must know. Personally, I hardly notice the ads, but I guess I can turn them off if I want, which I don't - I even try to remember to click on them once in awhile because DU deserves it.

DU now has over 100,000 members - it's grown a lot. No doubt it takes more time, money and energy to run. How can you not be grateful?

30. Clearly, you do NOT have to donate
I see that you have no star, so that obviously means you don't have to donate to enjoy reading and posting here.

And, we actually get something for our money, unlike the idiots over at FR who keep giving their money to support Rimjob's lavish lifestyle.

New features and forums are constantly being added here and additional capacity purchased to keep up with the growth.

So, just continue to freeload here and then have the nerve to complain about it. We'll pick up the slack for you.
