Are we willing to settle? How much will it take?
Yesterday, my husband and I went to a matinee performance of the musical Cabaret. Neither of us had seen the movie or any other production of Cabaret and we had no idea what impact it would have on our hearts.

I would say most of us have heard bits of the music. We are at least familiar with some of the lyrics. The lyrics I was not familiar with contain these words:

An offer comes, you take!
For the sun will rise and the moon will set,
And you'll learn how to settle for what you get,
It'll all go on if we're here or not,
So, who cares, so what?
So, who cares, so what?

While I believe life will go on --- to me the quality of life DOES matter.

Our Constitution is being shredded. We are being treated like criminals and subjects of the state. We are conditioned little by little to accept such treatment.

And If our economy tanks as badly as I think is possible, when we are hungry, will that move us to take to the streets? There are people hungry now. There is much injustice NOW. Should we not do something now?

As my husband and I sat down to dinner after the show, we shared our thoughts about the play. He told me that every time he thought about it he began to tear up. I too felt my eyes well with tears. But tears don't change anything. They are about sadness and regret.

I don't want to have any regrets. I will do everything I can to bring the light of hope back to this country.

The next thing I said to my husband was, "I'm not going to settle for things the way they are. I'm not going to sit down and shut up, and I sure as hell am not going to stand down."

1. and every time no action is taken to stop - truly stop
the outrages being committed, those who would oppress us know exactly how far they can push us and they know exactly just what the people will submit to

When you're constantly hit with a sledge hammer long enough you'll settle for the occasional knife prick - it feels like relief...nevermind you're bleeding to death in the process (instead of being crushed piece by piece)

How much will people take?

Cause the knife to feel like relief and people will adapt to the new pain...they'll even welcome it.
They'll tell themselves that at least it isn't the constant hammering

I really enjoyed your post. You're right...life will go on - but the quality of that living does matter

2. the leadership in DC isn't listening to people...
like you or me or the majority of those tending to vote their way. Or even a lot of the Congress people. I really think that two parties only and the idea of democracy just don't go all that well together. People need choices all along the spectrum of thought, not just, as the film "Waking Life" says, the puppet on the left or the puppet on the right.

The more I type this, the more I realize how sick I am of all this. The leading bastards in Congress don't seem to give a damn for the War in Iraq or the poor in the US and everywhere in the world. There are good folks in DC but there's either not enough or they are not figuring a way to bust through the wall of special interests and evil.

If it's Hillary on the top of the Dems ticket I'll hold my nose and vote. But I don't think I'm alone in thinking things are changing that if Hillary, or Edwards or Obama or whoever, does win, he/she better fear for his/her office from day one if he/she doesn't come in and do the work of the people. End the War. Eat the Rich. End the needless suffering in this world. Convince us he/she means it.
