"the Texas president has been sending the New York senator messages
to “maintain some political wiggle room in your campaign rhetoric about Iraq"

This is Maureeen Dowd quoting someone else, so consider the source, but still,

2. Is he sending information to all the other possible candidates
on both sides or is he singling out Hillary?

Also, while it is normal for opposition candidates to receive briefings from the CIA during the general election, this sounds like Bush is sending Hillary instructions so that she can continue his policies after the election.

17. Fuck yeah, it does. HRC is Bush-Lite at best. She's a shitty, corporate-loving senator
Why on earth does anyone believe she WOULD be any different as president (I'm saying "would" because I don't believe her to be "the" Democratic nominee, though I'm sure the DLC would just love that.

18. You know...
.. I find it funny that people here can watch Fahrenheit 911 and have no problem believing that Bush is in bed with the Saudis (which I believe also, there is no other explanation).

But when confronted with the same sort of evidence (guilt by association, to be sure) about the Clintons, well they just cannot believe.

Tell you what, HRC is ALREADY making the "we might not be able to pull out" noises, if she does manage to win I'll bet you MONEY she does not pull out, she was NEVER really against this war she only acted like it when she had to.

You might be right, people with two brain cells to rub together are not universal at DU.

8. Belive it now
http://www.examiner.com/a-953145~Bush_quietly_advising_Hillary_Clinton__top_Democrats.html

google bush advises clinton on iraq - several articles - was all over the place early last week....

"Washington, D.C. (Map, News) - President Bush is quietly providing back-channel advice to Hillary Rodham Clinton, urging her to modulate her rhetoric so she can effectively prosecute the war in Iraq if elected president.

In an interview for the new book “The Evangelical President,” White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten said Bush has “been urging candidates: ‘Don’t get yourself too locked in where you stand right now. If you end up sitting where I sit, things could change dramatically.’ ”

Bolten said Bush wants enough continuity in his Iraq policy that “even a Democratic president would be in a position to sustain a legitimate presence there.”

“Especially if it’s a Democrat,” the chief of staff told The Examiner in his West Wing office. “He wants to create the conditions where a Democrat not only will have the leeway, but the obligation to see it out.”

14. The article is rather unclear.
First it mentions Hillary by name, then goes on to suggest that Bush has been in contact with all the candidates. It's still creepy. There is a difference between telling someone what's out there and telling them what to do about it. In the early years of the Cold War, the slogan was that politics ended at the shoreline ie Democrats and Republicans agreed on all foreign policy. Bush seems to think that agreement is still in effect. Hasn't he noticed that the Democrats are running on ending his damn war?

15. If Bush didn't scare you before, the article will curl your hair.
Bush is working hard to make places like Gitmo a permanent part of the landscape. Unless the next president is really dedicated to the Constitution, it will be easy to leave all the structures and agencies in place, "just in case".

She is a good politician (I do not mean she would be a good president), and way too smart to be meeting with the WH right now.

16. I'm sorry, maybe I have my tin-foil hat on...
...but if Bush did indeed say these things to Hillary,
I think he's suggesting that something is going to happen
that will make anti-war candidates look like fools.

My read is that he's intimating that some kind of "event" is
going to happen--and he wants Hillary on the right side of the
issues, so she doesn't appear "weak on security" when the
big stuff that does down--goes down.

Obviously, all of this is mind blowing for a thousand different
reasons.

22. Ok, good...
...I'm not in tin-foil land. That's a plus.

I'm very curious and mystified by this story.

For one thing, it seems so incredibly obvious to me that
the Republicans want Hillary not only to win the Dem
nomination, but the presidency.

You just have to ask yourself...what in the hell is going on?

She certainly has toed the neocon warmongering line. She's been
adamant about not appearing too anti-war. She refused to denounce
her Iraq war stance. When the media drummed up the Iran war
issue, she parroted Bush's lines about Iran being a threat and she
said, "War with Iran is not off the table". She's been ultra-conservative
when it comes to criticizing Bush. We get a few sound bytes here and
there, but she's not half as upset as most of us are!

I always knew she was more war than anti-war. However, this Republican
support has me a bit perplexed. Gingrich couldn't praise her enough on
"This Week".

My guess is that the Republicans want two candidates: Republican (raging
warmonger) and Dem (warmonger lite). They're leveraging Hillary because
a candidate who is against this war--or a candidate who would roll make
the progress the neocons have made--is their worst frickin nightmare.

I think this particular topic deserves its own thread...
