Pat Buchanan was on MTP this AM, making excuses for those GOP candidates who skipped the debate
So Pat Buchanan was on MTP this AM, carrying the water for those GOP candidates (Romney, Thompson, McCain and Guiliani) who failed to show up for Tavis Smiley's All American Presidential debabate on Thursday, focused on issues of concern in the African-American community.

Buchanan believes there was a lot of risk for them to show up, and little for them to gain. He basically said they can afford to ignore minorities during the primary, but not in the general election. Huh?

Does he really think that I, as an African-American, am that clueless? If you ignore me during the primary process, why should I pay attention to you in the general election? I don't suffer from short-term memory loss.

And you can best believe that during the general election, I will remember those empty podiums at Thursday night's debate.

Tavis Smiley made an interesting point also on MTP this AM. After Buchanan made his comments, Tavis asked where does that leave African-American Republicans? As Tavis noted, there are African-American Republicans, and how are they supposed to determine who to support, if the candidates won't show up?

1. Pat Buchanan is the worst form of sycophant..
He's the ultimate watercarrier. A pariah. The GOP has repeatedly kicked him to the curb and he comes back for more. Slavishly apologizes for them and trots out their talking points. A more irrelevant hank of hair and bone likely doesn't exist.

2. How can a person of ANY minority group be a Republican??! They are all sell-outs
on some level, IMO, or enjoy negating themselves.

8. Here's my view on that....
We in the African-American community have never been a monolithic group.

Now, I happen to feel as though the Democratic Party has more representated my interests and my values than the Republican Party.

But, I am also more conservative on a lot of the social issues of our day. And I think THAT is what makes some African-Americans Republicans.

I don't happen to agree with my fellow African-Americans who are Republicans. But I respect their right to be Republicans, because we as African-Americans are not a monolithic group.

10. When Bush was elected Gov. in Texas, he said, "The blacks didn't come out
for me like the Hispanics did," and then vowed that he was not going to do anything
to help them as a group. What a pig!

He refused invitations, year after year, to address the NAACP as Presidents usually do.
Bush couldn't be bothered.

We all know how long he took to get interested in the effects of Katrina. But when a hurricane
was recently projected to hit Texas, he approved emergency funding two days before it even happened!!

Given these facts (and endless others), I still cannot understand how any African-American can vote for a party
that has no respect for minorities at all.

5. Pat Buchanan? And this is a surprise?
Does anyone really think he gives a fig about minorities in this country? Seriously?

In his world, everyone would be male, white and Irish-Catholic. You know, the way the country has always been? :sarcasm:

6. More proof there is no excuse for racism.
Doesn't surprise me in the least that Buchanan would do this. I'm sorry I missed this, I would've like to see Smiley and hear his responses to this.

7. Smiley's got a point
Those three African-American republicans that the camera makes sure to focus on every few minutes during the broadcast of the GOP Convention... How will they know who to vote for?
