Warren student's racial comments directed at blacks
http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=47439

Racially charged comments about blacks made by a white teenager at Warren Township High School's upperclassmen campus resulted in his arrest, police said, because he alarmed two students.

Part of Curtis Hiett's behavior included driving to the Almond Road building earlier this week with a noose hanging from his rear-view mirror and a Confederate flag displayed inside the vehicle, said Gurnee Deputy Police Chief Kevin Woodside. He was unable to describe the size of the noose.

However, Woodside said today, it was Hiett's comments about blacks -- not what was in the vehicle -- that resulted in a disorderly conduct charge Thursday.

Police said Hiett, 17, of 979 Charles Ave., Gurnee, was arrested at his home. The disorderly conduct charge is a misdemeanor.

1. His parents could have opted to allow their son to grow up with his own
perceptions of people by simply controlling their own racist outbursts and ravings at home. Looks as if they've spawned a child absolutely no more intelligent, more at home around the human race than they are.

Gurnee student charged for making allegedly racist statements at school
September 28, 2007 (ST. LOUIS) - A north suburban high school student has been charged as an adult after police say he made racially charged statements at school.

Gurnee police arrested 17-year-old Curtis Hiett after making offensive comments about black students Monday morning at Warren High School.
Hiett is charged with disorderly conduct, which is a misdemeanor.

Police tell the Daily Herald that Hiett also drove around the school building with a noose hanging from his rearview mirror and a Confederate flag inside the vehicle.

Cops say racial comments root of arrest

September 29, 2007
BY NICHOLAS ALAJAKIS nalajakis@scn1.com

GURNEE -- Racial statements made by a Warren Township High School student had more to do with his arrest earlier this week than any paraphernalia in his car, Gurnee police said Friday.

Curtis Hiett, 17, was charged with disorderly conduct Thursday following an incident at Warren's Almond Road campus, where he allegedly made racial comments toward two black students, Dep. Chief Kevin Woodside said.

Earlier in the week, the school received a complaint that Hiett had a Confederate flag and a noose hanging from his car's rearview mirror, but that incident did not lead to the charges, Woodside said.

Woodside said police never saw a flag or nooses that other students claim were hanging from the mirror.

The charges hinged on statements he made that offended the students and caused a disturbance within the school, Woodside said.

Hiett did not make any statement to police about a motive for his actions, Woodside said.

Following Hiett's arrest, Woodside said police want to make sure the campus is safe and that no student feels threatened.

2. As offensive as I am sure he was, are we sure that we want people arrested for that?

The paper does not describe what he said so there is no way to tell how bad it is, but even so, are we sure we want every boor who makes a nasty or incediary comment to be hauled off to jail?

3. Possibly it wasn't one comment.. It seems that he was
"alarming and disturbing two girls since the academic year began."

Maybe the campus could see that they had a potentially deadly situation on their hands.

4. I see the light. I defer to your great wisdom. No doubt the officials had absolutely no idea

what they were talking about. It's far better to look the other way, and assume the students lied.

This sullen, malignant thug should be returned to his pickup A.S.A.P., and given back his noose, with apologies.
