Google Earth reveals Swastika-shaped Naval building on Coronado Island
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 09:44 AM by BurtWorm

This image from Google Earth shows the swastika-shaped barracks at the Coronado Naval base near San Diego.

Following objections from the Anti-Defamation League, the U.S. Navy has set aside $600,000 of its 2008 budget for landscaping and rooftop adjustments that will camouflage the shape of the building.

"We told the Navy this was an incredibly inappropriate shape for a structure on a military installation," says Morris S. Casuto, the ADL's regional director. "<But we> never ascribed evil intent to the structure's design."

1. But, look! There's also a B17 headed towards it,
just like America smashed the Nazis. It's telling a story. It's art.

3. That's why I don't get the hysteria. There's also a baseball diamond right after the swastika;
charming imho.

of the solar wheel at one time. A good thing. I am all for taking it back from what the Nazis did to it's meaning.

7. It's 4 L-shaped buildings that have been there for 40 years...
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 10:24 AM by JHB
...but now that we have people scouring the GoogleEarth for de facto "easter eggs", it's suddenly "incredibly inappropriate"! And they're going to spend 600K to fix it!

Give me the money: I'll spell out "Get A Life, You Dope" on the ballfield next to it.

This is the second time I've seen this on the DU. It appears that every few months, somebody rediscovers this factoid and there's a furor over it.

14. Whether it was intended or not is 100% beside the point...
... The only question is: Do you want a building that in fact looks like a swastika, or not?

22. Unless you're a bird, it doesn't look like a swastika.
These buildings have stood for decades without offending anybody. I fail to see how the fact that they resemble swastikas IF VIEWED FROM A THOUSAND FEET ABOVE to be any kind of a serious issue.

16. Maybe they did it to make the Nazis feel at home.
"The CIA, the State Department, and U.S. Army intelligence each created special programs for the specific purpose of bringing selected former Nazis and collaborators to the United States.... The government employed these men and women for their expertise in propaganda and psychological warfare, for work in American laboratories, and even as special guerrilla troops for deployment inside the USSR in the midst of a nuclear war.... Hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of such recruits were SS veterans; some had been officers of the bloody Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the Nazi party's security service."

18. Remember the SS shaped flag stripes we were supposed to believe was innocent, too?
It was on Bush's organization to replace AmericaCorps or something like that.

I don't believe this was an innocent mistake.

Bushes and their Nazi friends have been influencing our country since before, during and AFTER WW2.

31. No. But a sick sense of entitlement and getting 'over' on American citizens
isn't something new for the Bushes and their fascist friends is it?

Do the words IranContra, BCCI and CIA drugrunning mean anything to you?

Does handing our ports over to Dubai (BCCI Dubai) qualify as an act of arrogance and a sick joke to you?

20. Waste of money...
We really need to grow up. Take the money and save a few lives, maybe repair a bridge or two. That should be the legacy of the defeat of Nazi Germany, not stupidity and political correctness. This is almost as bad as Congressional Mother's Day proclamations.

25. It's just four L-shaped buildings with nice courtyards between them.
Edited on Fri Sep-28-07 12:45 PM by Kelly Rupert
It doesn't differ significantly from the buildings you can see to its left. The swastika is a rather simple geometric design, and this is something of a waste of money.

33. I think you're being naive
The truth is, this building is really designed to be two pairs of LL-shaped buildings. I detect the villainous hand of Lex Luthor behind it all. These bastards must be stopped before ALL our buildings are shaped in Lex's hideous image. OMG! the Capital Dome looks like a spiked German war helmet!!

Mere coinky-dink? I do not think.
