House Passes Children’s Insurance Measure

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 — The House on Tuesday passed a bill providing health insurance to more than 10 million children, but supporters of the measure fell short of the two-thirds majority they would need to override a veto repeatedly threatened by President Bush.

The bill was approved by a vote of 265 to 159. House Republican leaders strenuously opposed the measure, saying it cost too much, $60 billion over five years. But 45 House Republicans voted for it, along with 220 Democrats. Republican support for the bill was more than expected...

4. But not enough to beat the veto
The total number is 424 voting, that means that 11 didn't vote, and we know that a handful of democrats voted with the Republicans.

We also know that 265 isn't enough to override Bush's veto, so the bill is dead! It was a good attempt.

12. To be fair, there was nothing specifically in there about attacking Iran..
it still sucks though. Inexcusable really.

11. Kudos for children's health.
Hope it doesn't get stripped down in the Senate or markups.

14. If it's such a a worthy objective, why impose a REGRESSIVE tax to pay for it?
Edited on Wed Sep-26-07 01:22 PM by TahitiNut
Nancy Pelosi, just as a SINGLE example, won't pay a single cent more for this 'enhancement' to SCHIP - nor will most of the wealthiest people in this nation. It's easy to proclaim one's self as righteous and 'holy' in supporting the expansion of health coverage for children when one imposes the tax burden on others.

I favor offering heath care coverage to children and the least-empowered in this nation ... and paying for it with EQUITABLE taxation.
