Hard Ball Tonight: Matthews says ...Americans don't know where Burma Is on Map
but they "do care about New Orleans." He keeps asking why Bush focused on "Burma" when no one is worked up about Burma.

I don't think Matthews really believes what he said...but was trying to focus on Bush "being out of touch" with what Americans are concerned with. He asked every guest on that topic...why Bush was SOOOO concerned with "Burma" (which really isn't the name of that country, anymore) but it was probably all Bush could cope with in pronunciation.

Anyway, the "meme between the lines" was BUSH IS SO OUT OF TOUCH...he thinks Americans are up in arms over Buddist Marches.

6. Christian Missionaries were expelled a few months back from Myanmar
Of course, this has sparked faux outrage of a "Christian Genocide" in Myanmar. Not that the Military Junta that runs the country is anything but corrupt, despotic and tyrannical. But it's all the talk among fundies. That's probably why he's addressing it.

19. The military junta that controls the country calls it Myanmar
Just as Pol Pot called Cambodia "Democratic Kampuchea". Those who cling to the way things were (before the military takeover) continue to call it Burma.

20. from the CIA

Pyidaungzu Myanma Naingngandaw (translated by the US Government as Union of Myanma and by the Burmese as Union of Myanmar)
local short form: Myanma Naingngandaw
former: Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma
note: since 1989 the military authorities in Burma have promoted the name Myanmar as a conventional name for their state; this decision was not approved by any sitting legislature in Burma, and the US Government did not adopt the name, which is a derivative of the Burmese short-form name Myanma Naingngandaw

8. What's happening in Burma (Myanmar) should worry Bush, and is cool on its own terms
People rising up against a repressive regime is always worth noting, and the Myanmar regime is certainly repressive. It should not be dismissed - Buddhist monks have had a big influence in Southeast Asia, and Martin Luther King and certain other religious leaders have been big-time leaders here, too.

By the way:

16. Burna was a British Colony.
After the Brits were kicked out the name was changed & the country sunk into a RWing Dictatorship. How much did US Govt.s support that Regime?

22. Technically, Burma is not on the map...
...so we should not fault our fellow citizens for not knowing where to find it on one.

Now Myanmar, that's a different question...
