Can we finally call Ireland a "terrorist nation"??
Since 1969, Ireland harbored terrorists, the most well-known of which is the Provisional Irish Republican Army("The Irish Volunteers"). Over a span of three decades, they have been responsible for bombings and deaths of thousands.

Is it time to invade them and topple their government?

:sarcasm:

Funny how that works, isn't it?

67. Now, let's think a sec. The right-wing hates Teddy Kennedy.
Therefore, anything we do that makes Teddy Kennedy's head explode is good, according to the right, right? Therefore, the right will support invasion of Ireland. And anybody who argues against invading Ireland must be a Teddy Kennedy lover!

Got it!

I'm 100% Norwegian on my mother's side and mostly lowland Scots-Irish on my father's side. Thus, I regard myself completely descended from Vikings - at home and at sea, pillaging and ....!

51. Many Irish place names are apparently derived (descended) from the Norse names.
Dubhlinn became Dublin, Vadrefjord became Waterford, and Weisfjord became Wexford. Other placenames derived from Norse names include Cork, Limerick, Strangford, Leixlip, Carlingford, Youghal, Howth, Dalkey and Fingall. There are similar derived names in Scotland. The "permanent bases" set up by the Vikings seem to be akin to the "permanent bases" set up by the U.S. Terrorism begets terrorism.

I wonder when the U.S. is gong to decide to get back at those "terrorist" Norsemen and bomb Norway and Denmark.

The history of the Celts is pretty well documented. It's probably the most important thing in all of European history, of course. And I'm totally objective in my beliefs on that.

90. I'm familiar with the topic.
Celtic history pre-dates the Vikings by a long, long time. Two books of interest are Frank Delany's "The Celts" (Little Brown; 1986) and Barry Cunliffe's "The Ancient Celts" (Oxford; 1997). The similarities in art tend to fall into the Middle Ages, which is a relatively late era in Celtic history. Much more important than similarities in art is the study of their languages, which are from very different groups. The Vikings came from ancestors who were distinct from the Celts. One of my relatives used to teach the Irish and related languages; a book that might be of interest is Welsch author Meic Stephens' "Linguistic Minorities in Western Europe" (1976).

57. Malcolm X used to say
that if a man comes in your house with a gun to rob you, he is a robber. But if you take a gun and remove him from your house, that doesn't make you a robber. I haven't helped any robbers.

I do not take seriously any person who attempts to justify what the British have done in Ireland, nor do I take seriously their attempts to blame the Irish for attempting to remove them.

Now, one last question for you, and I really, really, really hope you will answer it for me:

What's your favorite color?

Wolfe Tone's address to the court is found in "The World's Famous Orations," edited by William Jennings Bryan (Vol 6, pages 132-136; 1906). It is followed by the speech given by my relative Robert Emmet (pages 137-148), which I quote from on St Patrick's Day on DU.

Coming from an Irish family and considering the brawls that took place at "reunions".
The kind where the cops we're called and frequently bruised themselves, I'd say, if it's good enough for Iran, it's good enough for Ireland and probably more justified.

There are pubs up and down that gathered and sent money to the IRA during 'the troubles'....the IRA is a known terrorist organisation, therefore if you gave money to them you are aiding and abetting a terrorist organisation, therefore you are a criminal and fall under the auspices of the monkey-in-chiefs declaration of war on 'turra' and therefore should be sent to Gitmo...

But of course you're actually only a REAL turra-ist if you're brown-skinned, have a funny-sounding last name and haven't accepted Jay-sus Chraaaaaaaast as your personal saviour....oh, and you just happen to have a shit-load of oil under your feet...

58. Potatoes? Bushmills? Waterford crystal? Belleek?
Guinness is good enough for me, though. Mother's milk. :toast:

There are terrorists in Canada.

If Utah had Guiness we could bomb them too.

68. Guinness is still brewed in Dublin
they've got over 60 acres in Dublin to house their brewery - though the largest brewery for Guinness in the world is now in Nigeria! And, if I may be so bold, a pint here is MUCH better than anything you can get in America :)

79. Those are just the "known reserves" of Guinness.
We have specially-bred stout-sniffing dogs that can find vast deposits of previously unknown Guinness. We'll need a Guinness-sharing agreement and we can start our double-hulled tankers running.

:silly: :dunce:

69. Thanks for my new concern du jour!
I didn't feel it appropriate to insinuate my lily white Irish ass into the Latino or Black outrage du jour threads, so don't mind me as I settle in on what might be the only thread many here feel I'm qualified to comment on! You see, apparently, we humans are not allowed to feel empathy or to attempt to see from the perspective of others, so poor old whitey me should just stay where she belongs!

Pardon my plop!

:)

:hi:

Give me a swift kick if I should even come close to feeling proud to be a decent human being, because you know, if you are white and proud of anything, you surely must have a white robe and a pointy white hat lurking in your closet!

:rofl:

Please excuse the laughter... surely I must be crazy...

74. Au contraire, mon ami d'guerre! Let's ask the troops!
Population of Ireland: 6 million
Population of Iran: 70 million

Climate of Ireland: Moderate and wet
Climate of Iran: Hot and Dry

Language of Ireland: English
Language of Iran: Persian

Beer in Ireland: Guinness
Beer in Iran: (alcohol against Shariah law)

Oops!!!

So ... less than 1/10th the number of people to kill and they've got beer!!

I think I know which one the troops will pick.

And it's close in spelling, too ... only three more letters: 'e,' 'l,' and 'd.'

:silly:

85. "A Nation once again!
Sing with me, Brother TahitiNut!

"When boyhood's fire was in my blood
I read of ancient freemen,
For Greece and Rome who bravely stood,
Three hundred men and three men;
And then I prayed I yet might see
Our fetters rent in twain,
And Ireland, long a province, be.
A Nation once again!

A Nation once again,
A Nation once again,
And lreland, long a province, be
A Nation once again!

And from that time, through wildest woe,
That hope has shone a far light,
Nor could love's brightest summer glow
Outshine that solemn starlight;
It seemed to watch above my head
In forum, field and fane,
Its angel voice sang round my bed,
A Nation once again!

It whisper'd too, that freedom's ark
And service high and holy,
Would be profaned by feelings dark
And passions vain or lowly;
For, Freedom comes from God's right hand,
And needs a Godly train;
And righteous men must make our land
A Nation once again!

So, as I grew from boy to man,
I bent me to that bidding
My spirit of each selfish plan
And cruel passion ridding;
For, thus I hoped some day to aid,
Oh, can such hope be vain ?
When my dear country shall be made
A Nation once again!"
