Please Thank David Shuster!!!
This evening, David Shuster hosted the MSNBC show "Tucker." On air, Mr. Shuster confronted republican hypocrisy in the form of Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn). To watch a clip, please use this link:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8063292/

The republicans who want to make MoveOn and the NY Times the "issue" are very, very unhappy with Mr. Shuster. As I write this, they are asking their puppets to e-mail outrage to MSNBC and the Tucker Show. As you read this, the puppets are sending outrage.

It is important that rational human beings contact MSNBC/"Tucker" and express their appreciation for Mr. Shuster's exposing the hypocrisy of people like Marsha. She knows a lot of details about MoveOn and the Times, but was unaware of the name of the last person from her district who was killed in Iraq. An 18-year old.

Please contact the Tucker show and thank our friend Mr. Shuster"

Thank you for helping. Please consider keeping this thread afloat!

Your friend
H2O Man

I view Marsha Blackburn a whiny, smarmy creepy little Bunt.

Yes she acts very hypocritical, and cares more about power than the lives of soldiers and Iraqi civilians that died in Bu$h's Oil war in Iraq.

You have to do your best to ignore her personality when you listen and see her.

2. Thanks for that link, H20 Man! When I saw Marsha Blackburn,
I thought she was another conservative r/w hag from CA who was on Hardball recently, and turned the channel. Little did I know I'd miss a show, especially since I didn't like Shuster's interview of Eli Pariser last week.

I will be sending my thanks!

177. I liked his interview of Pariser
All Shuster did was challenge Eli; Pariser held his own beautifully because he's a smart person with a purpose. He gave Blackburn the same opportunity and she stumbled badly because she's a tool with a purse full of talking points and no ideas.

Here's my email response:

Dear Mr. Shuster,

Thank you for asking that very pertinent question of Rep. Blackburn (R-Tenn). I love watching true journalism in action AGAIN. It's been a long time, just so grateful that you and your bosses at MSNBC value the truth above partisan politics. If these congressional representatives are truly "supporting the troops" it follows that they SHOULD know when one of their constituents dies in battle. And if they don't, why are they paying lip service?

This woman is a fake, a charleton and well deserved to be exposed for her hypocrisy.

It really was a wonderful interview. We know the republicans will be whining, just like they did when Mr. Matthews spanked Michelle Malkin a few years back. They can be vicious, but they are in for a surprise. David looks like a mild-mannered guy -- but he is very fast on his feet, and he can shred any republican who tries to justify focusing on the NY Times while ignoring the 18-year olds dying in Iraq.

Write letters to other stations expressing your outrage at Blackburn, for not caring enough about the troops to even find out the name of the most recently killed service member from her district. If they can make a 2 week story out of a god damned advertisement, I should think Blackburn's cynical exploitation of/indifference to our war dead should be worth a mention.

102. David Shuster crossed the line.
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 01:00 AM by bleever
There's been a line in journalism these last years, whereby the host or questioner, no matter how much the interviewee of the Republican persuasion might be distorting, cherry-picking, or outright lying to your face, still must courteously allow the Republican to continue to lie, for at least 51% of the air time, in any manner they see fit without being called on it.

Chris Matthews has been outspoken lately in not letting his guests get away with that, and Shuster did a fabulous job of that in this interview with Blackburn (who is one of the most odious practitioners of this kind of propaganda).

ed: My email:

David Shuster was right to expect an answer to a good question.

Marsha Blackburn wanted to talk about other things, but David Shuster asked specific questions about why an ad by an advocacy group is more important than the people making the sacrifice.

I applaud his ability to be forthright in his questions, and how he receives the answers that are offered.

Sincerely,

.......

He is so great at calling people on their bullshit and having the facts to back it up.

And it's not partisan, it's factual. I was so pissed the other day I caught part of Hardball and that dingbat Laura Ingraham was on. She was saying outrageous things and Tweety was calling her on them and said they were partisan and she said well you let Shuster on with his partisan liberal ideas and he didn't say anything to defend Shuster. Shuster doesn't come off partisan to me at all. He sticks to facts, he doesn't lend his opinion. Can't help it if the facts come down against the hypocritical Republicans. They're just not used to getting called on their bs.

Dear Mr. Shuster,

Your interview with Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn) was incredible! The incredulity you showed at her not knowing the name of the latest fallen soldier from Tenn., and exposing her shallow, "yellow magnet" level of real support for our fighting men an women in Iraq was very refreshing. This type of questioning of our representatives is far too rare in this day of "Paris Hilton Journalism". I applaud you, sir!

116. Thanks for the post H2O Man, but I have a question.
I like Shuster, and Blackburn is about as bad as they get. I don't think he was at his best here, although it seems like he sliced her vena cava, and around here, and blood is flowing.

As I watched the interview, I got the feeling that David ambushed her with that question. Honestly, I don't think most reps would have been able to provide the name of the last war victim from their district. Hard to know without asking them. Conversely, suppose she had the answer? Then what? Makes her look good and proves nothing. Unless of course he's sure that reps don't carry that information, and then he knew it was an unfair question.

I think he should have presented something she needs to know and tripped her on that. From the responses I've seen, I might be alone in this. Do you think most representatives would have been able to answer that question?

Thanks for keeping up, and of course, for your wisdom.

126. I think you are leaving out an important part of the equation, though.
Schuster isn't demanding that every rep. know such names. Here's why his question is not unfair.

Essentially, he asked why someone who knows the details such as NY Times advertising rates, profitability, layoffs, etc.--when it has nothing to do with her job and as he pointed out, NY Times hasn't killed anyone--would not be more knowledgeable about something far more important AND relevant to her job. If she has the time and ability to learn about and remember the former, she should spend it learning about and remembering and ACTING ON the latter.

You'll notice he let her set herself up spouting all these details first. She set her own trap. There wasn't anything unfair about it.

One can't plead ignorance when it is willful ignorance resulting from hypocritical choices you have made.

138. Good point, I'll take another look. But...
I've already heard the clip several times on the radio. They start from that question. Who will appreciate it but us? She, of course, will say she was blind-sided. Then she and her defenders can go into all they do for those troops. Sorry to not recall his name a month and a half later.

I'm sure she was invited to discuss the ad, and has probably been one of the loudest critics. (Marcia Blackburn gives Ann Coulter a run.) No surprise that she was prepared on her arguments in depth.

I think he should have questioned her about the content of the ad. I've never heard it discussed anywhere. Then he could show that she knows all the ad rates, but not what it says. That would be a legitimate *Gotcha!* And if somehow she could recount what it said, (doubtful) -- that opens the door to the discussion we really want to hear. In short, war criminals.

I like Shuster's reports. And nothing sounds better than the gutting of Marcia Blackburn.

162. I saw Shuster as pointing out how screwed up her priorities are.
My e-mail to MSNBC:

I'd like to express my appreciation to David Shuster for his common-sense approach during his discussion with Rep. Blackburn. There was much wisdom in his pointing out how misdirected she is in regard to her priorities: she "knows" chapter & verse (or Republican talking points) about the New York Times & MoveOn, yet she had no idea what the name was of the last soldier from her district to die in Iraq.

Further, in response to Rep. Blackburn's defense of Rush Limbaugh's use of the term "Sen. Betrayus", I'd like to say that Rush Limbaugh "didn't buy an ad", but his twisted & hateful point of view reaches a comparable amount, or more, of listeners on a daily basis.

MSNBC has been a breath of fresh air during this nightmarish presidency, largely due to David Shuster and Keith Olbermann.

to discuss the republicans recent attempts to avoid talking about the war, using the tactic of attempting to focus on the MoveOn ad. In fact, the ad has been discussed at length. It would have made little sense to allow the republican to avoid answering questions regarding the issue she was there to discuss, and let her instead pretend the ad was the central issue of the day.

Watching her stutter through some sort of response to his question about the name of the last soldier from her district killed in Iraq was both sad and priceless at the same time.

One thing for sure: It totally brought home the hypocrisy of the RW anti Move On org people. They have NO clue about the real soldiers who die in that hell hole of Iraq, but are outraged that some lying figure head is called out for his lies.

Talk about a screwed up value system...assuming they have some value system of any nature.

134. Wow. That Was Awesome. I Totally Missed It But Am Glad To Have Caught This Thread.
There aren't many reps I like less than her. Can't stand her in fact. To see him call her out like that, and make her visibly uncomfortable, while sticking to his point and taking it to her, was just awesome to watch. It was refreshing to FINALLY see an interview that ACTUALLY MADE SENSE IN REALITY. So often, always the pleasantries and lack of follow ups. So often, always just letting them get away with the talking points and never asking the obvious questions that each one of us are shouting and the screen, while wondering "how the hell can they just let them keep talking their shit and not call them on it?". So often, it's never a real conversation and it's just all contrived bullshit.

But to finally see a real conversation in which the bullshit it not allowed to fly and in which the interviewer steps in and challenges it, was so nice to see.

I'd LOVE to see more of him! Problem is though, that I'm sure repubs will be avoiding him like the plague now. He embarrassed her good.

144. A contrary view
Much as I like David Shuster -- and, really, was there anyone better during the Scooter Libby trial in focusing on the real point? -- I thought his interview of Blackburn was overkill and at the same time not enough.
On the Move-On ad vs. the dead soldier, say it once you've made your point, and it's a very good point. Say it three times, it looks mean. He could have nailed her on a million points on what demands real outrage, but his harping about her not knowing the name of the soldier made her look sympathetic when there is nothing at all sympathetic about her.
We can all identify with failing to recall a name. That's what I fear the average person will take away from the interview.
David lost an opportunity to show what a non issue the Move-On ad really is and that the GOP ruckus over it is really just one more attempt to redirect scrutiny from what really matters.
But what do I know? I thought Lloyd Bentzen would be perceived as mean when he told Dan Quayle, "You're no John Kennedy."

I didn't link from here to send it, however. (Isn't it true that they can tell if you've linked from a "liberal" site? I'm such a Luddite, I don't know.)

What a refreshing video!

When I was in Germany last year I watched CNN international, and the RW talking pointer they had on was completely undone by the interviewer, who had actual facts behind his actual follow up questions, which of course totally gobsmacked the RW idiot. I was delighted. It's been too long a time since we had "probing" interviews here.

148. Thank you, Mr. Shuster (I misspelled his name so it would look more authentic!)
The TV happened to be on MSNBC last night and I was too busy to change the channel when the Tucker show came on. Boy was I ever shocked and amazed when some guy named David Schuster (?) spoke with some congresswoman from Tennessee who could not remember the last soldier in her district to die in Iraq.

I am so used to the "news" media shilling for the fiasco in Iraq that I could not believe my ears when Schuster actually noted the hypocrisy in any Republicans complaining about the MoveOn.org ad. Have we slide so far into fascism and lies in this country that we can no longer tolerate a dissenting voice????

I only wish that Schuster had asked the congresswoman why it was OK for her party to claim that McCain had an illegitimate black baby, that Max Cleland was a coward, and that Kerry did not earn his medals.

It was so refreshing to hear someone note the hypocrisy in the outrageous tactics of the Republicans who then cry foul when someone uses the same tactics on them. I also found it interesting that the congresswoman claimed to be so involved with the military families in her district but couldn't name the last soldier from her district that died in Iraq and did so just a few weeks ago. My brother, who strongly supported the fiasco in Iraq, then served there and came back singing a far different tune.

I live in a heavily military area (Hampton Roads, Virginia) and I get the same report from those here who served in Iraq: "We never should have gone there! It's a mess."

The congresswoman, like too many politicians today, put their party and the interests of big money before the interests of their constituents.

Shame on them and shame on the "news" media that fails to hold them accountable!

Thank you MSNBC and thank you Mr. Schuster for attempting to bring honor back to the news profession.

Oh yeah. No doubt there will be times he'll piss me off, but right now we need truth-tellers, and he does it night in and night out.

There is a coordinated effort to avoid going on MSNBC. The hosts and reporters aren't the only ones aware of that. David Shuster has accepted the task of highlighting this curious republican tactic. It is something that isn't going away -- and DUers have assisted the effort to keep the spotlight on this.

I'm tired of the people who call themselves journalists lobbing softballs and letting the salesmen for fascist ideals get away with their goebbelsesque rhetoric.

This was pure pleasure. Stewart, Colbert, Olbermann, Shuster. My Four Horsemen of Sanity.

Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn Flustered by MSNBC Host
SEPTEMBER 24, 2007 - 09:39 PM

Tennessee Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn got a dose of tough journalism tonight on Tucker Carlson's MSNBC show. Substitute host David Shuster did the honors:
Shuster: "Let's talk about the public trust. You represent, of course, a district in western Tennessee. What was the name of the last solider from your district who was killed in Iraq?"

Blackburn:"The name of the last soldier killed in Iraq uh - from my district I - I do not know his name ..."

Shuster: "Okay, his name was Jeremy Bohannon. He was killed August the 9th, 2007. How come you didn’t know the name?"

Blackburn: "I - I, you know, I - I do not know why I did not know the name..."

Shuster: "But you weren’t appreciative enough to know the name of this young man. He was 18 years old who was killed, and yet you can say chapter and verse about what’s going on with The New York Times and Move On.org." "Don’t you understand, the problems that a lot of people would have, that you’re so focused on an ad. When was the last time a New York Times ad ever killed somebody? I mean, here we have a war that took the life of an 18-year-old kid, Jeremy Bohannon, from your district, and you didn’t even know his name."

Maybe Blackburn forgot she wasn't on Fox.

:wow: (Bold out in that last paragraph is mine.)

186. And Yet, Unless I'm Mistaken, Rudy Got The Same Rate As MoveOn Did!
So where's the screaming about this?? It's okay for HIM to attack Democrats (Hillary I think) and pay the SAME rate and we hear NOTHING about this at all!

I commented on this last night, but either my information is completely wrong or it's just okay with everybody and we just look the other way! It is certainly "petty" of the Repukes, but their "pettiness" sure gets LOTS OF PLAY!! MoveOn coughs up the balance, Rudy gets a over-looked! And yes, I do realize we don't want to look like them, HOWEVER it WORKS and it makes Democrats look like they caved in, and that NYT's is our shill!

Do correct my facts if I'm mistaken, I DO welcome knowing the truth because I may have heard something and taken it out of context! That much I admit.

Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 10:13 PM by erpowers
I think David Schuster did a good job and the people and the media need more people like him, but I think he could have gone after her more. First, he could have and should have pointed out that Guliani got the same rate from the New York Times. Second, I think she should have pounded her about not know the soldiers name every time she said something, especially about keeping in touch with military personnel. Every time she talked about emailing soldiers are keeping in contact with the families of soldiers he should have asked her to give one name of one person to whom she had spoken. I noticed that throughout the whole interview she never mentioned one name. Finally, he should have mentioned that Limbaugh does not have to buy ad space in that he has a radio talk show in which he gets to use the airwaves for free.
