Poll question: Okay, I apologize.
Edited on Mon Sep-24-07 12:19 PM by Bicoastal
Poll is cancelled on account of the OP's feeling guilty about making DU look bad. Not my finest hour here, in hindsight...

Still, I wish the 5 who voted yes would explain to me how they came to their opinion. And I know you're not ALL lurking FReepers, since some of you have been posting.

Would you like to have to wear a veil at all times?

This is beyond ridiculous. Do you know anything about Iran? Or even the United States?

how'd you like your sister, wife, mother, daughter, any woman you know to be forced to wear a veil?

30. OK, I might as well tell you...
...I would pick the US any day of the week, of course, no matter who our President is! Under Ahmadinejad, Iran's civil rights record is abysmal--gays, Jews, women, atheists, etc. have it way worse there than they do here. These are cold hard facts, and there's simply no comparison.

Honestly? I just wanted to see if any DU'ers would choose Iran over this country--and they did! Call it a stupid, biased, FReeper-bait poll if you will, but it's eye-opening that, as of this post, five of our ranks have voted blindly against Bush.

I'm shocked...sort of...

39. As I pointed out below, you never know
how many freepers sign up at DU and skew polls, and look for chances to make DU look like a nuthouse. Therefore if there are no comments below justifying the choice of Iran, I look at those votes as unvalidated.

19. We have no idea? Iran is not a giant question mark on a map.
Any place whose constitution proclaims it to be eternally dedicated to an authoritarian form of religion should not rank high on an American's good places to live list.

44. Gee, I don't know, it's not like we've got this massive web of information with millions of sources
connecting the entire globe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_Iran#Gender_Issues

"As an Islamic state, Iran's legislation, which is derived from a highly conservative interpretation of Islamic law, re-enforces male supremacy."

"For example, in 2003, Iran elected not to become a member of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) since the convention contradicted the Islamic Sharia law in Clause A of its single article."

"This creates numerous problems in issues regarding rape, where the female is at fault by default. In such cases, the act of sexual penetration must be attested by at least four male Muslim witnesses of good character."

"Legal imbalances such as this can be seen in the case of individuals such as Atefah Sahaaleh who was executed by the state for 'inappropriate sexual relations', however was most probably a rape victim."

You want to live there? Fine. Then go there, vote for Dennis Kucinich and hope to Allah that you or a member of your family is never raped.

6. Pointless Poll
Anyone who votes for Iran is utterly ignorant and/or stupid.

The only reason I can see that would be preferable to live there is say a sick mother that you can't get out and you need to take care of. Something like that. Even then it's not 'preferable' to live there, just necessary.

21. Perhaps they are Persian and miss their family, friends, and
former homeland... or have experienced current day Iran and aren't buying into all the propaganda.

I don't defend the direction this regime has taken Iran, but neither do I defend the direction that the Bush* regime has taken the US. Ask Europeans how many of them would want to live in the US....certainly less would say yes than in previous decades, I'd be willing to bet.

It's intellectually dishonest, given the insanity of such a "Sophie's Choice" poll, to ask "Why do you want to murder your son?" You've now repeatedly mischaracterized this idiocy as where people "want to live."

If YOU cannot comprehend the appalling mischaracterization of such a phrase then I don't know what else to say to you.
